Jim Lauderdale & Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys, I Feel Like Singing Today
Label: Dualtone

On the title track of this album, Nashville stalwart Jim Lauderdale sounds a bit like the eager schoolboy: hair combed, dressed up in his finest suit (albeit a Nudie), standing at the front of the classroom, ready to show his master all he's learned. It soon becomes apparent, though, that Lauderdale has already earned himself a Ph.D. His songs, all written with bluegrass icon Stanley's beautifully haunting tenor in mind, are adept and authentic: put a vintage tune — "Maple on the Hill," a traditional version of which appears here — next to Lauderdale's "Another Sinner's Prayer," add a few atmospheric scratches, and it would be hard to date them based on listening alone.

Stanley's backing band the Clinch Mountain Boys contribute some nice solos and harmonies, but the vocal star is Stanley himself; he's always been able to come under the lead and make everything blend right no matter who's singing with him. As Stanley ages, his voice, which has long embodied the expression "high lonesome sound," enters its eerie prime; it's no wonder that a cappella numbers like the new gospel tune "Like Him" (where Lauderdale demonstrates his own ability to hold a high note) are some of the… read more »

"what do you really care about?"

Hoofprints

This album reminds me of the scene in "Walk the Line" when Johnny Cash was singing a gospel song for a record producer. The version was trite and mechanical. When the producer stopped Cash and said, "what do you really care about?" Cash played something from his heart and it knocked the producer over. The lesson is, forget the fake gospel and Jesus music. It aint real and it is trite. What do you really care about? I'm sure this aint it.

They Say All Media Guide

North Carolina native Jim Lauderdale is well-known in Nashville as a proficient songwriter and an excellent performer in his own right. This album finds Lauderdale taking a shot a bluegrass music. He even wrote or co-authored nine of the 15 tunes on the CD, including two of them with former Grateful Dead songwriter Robert Hunter. He also had the good sense to throw in with Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys, one of the premier bluegrass/mountain music bands in the world. This is a unique project for Lauderdale. The fact that he succeeds so thoroughly is due not only to his eminent songwriting chops but also because he has obviously learned his bluegrass lessons very well over the years. Given that anyone who can sing will sound like a veteran bluegrasser if they’re singing with Ralph Stanley, it’s still remarkable how convincingly Lauderdale has slipped into this genre. – Philip Van Vleck
