A sampler of mellow jazz from Concord, Sounds of Winter is full of chillout tracks for soothing those jangled nerves after a drive home on icy roads during rush hour. The compiler must have been thinking about global warming, since most of the cuts deal with rain rather than snow, and a resigned grayness is featured on most of these selections, but it all slides by warm and easy. Highlights include Scott Hamilton’s breathy tenor sax on “Ill Wind,” a wonderful duet with Tony Bennett singing and Bill Evans at the piano for “You Must Believe in Spring,” and Toots Thielemans’ warm and comfortable “Rain Waltz.” – Steve Leggett
