yeah, words like beautiful, melancholic, gorgeous... sum this one up. Late Blues is my favourite track, 599 is about as close as Ida get to rocking on this album but it's all fantastic.

Deceptively and Consistently Brilliant

Quinimine

Ida, to me, has historically been a band that won't let me forget they exist. Everytime they fade from memory they come back to haunt me. This album has been out for awhile and even though i was aware of it upon its release, i ignored it and now have discovered its majestic grace. From their first record on Simple Machines way back in time they transfixed me (as they did live when my band coincidently opened up for them in Quebec City back in the 90s - it was just Dan & Liz and our whole band was smitten) This album, like their others, has the certainty of poignant melancholy wrapped in the bloody-mindedness of holy optimism. If only the world had this much humility and grace, we would all be much better off.

BEAUTIFUL

This is a truly gorgeous album, musically. I listen to it ALL the time. Very mellow, melancholy, etc. very cathartic. Genius musical arrangements and vocal harmonies, oh so lush. If you're not sure, AT LEAST download "Laurel Blues", "599", "Honeyslide", and"Written on My Face." They're the album's not-so-boringly-quiet-and-slow songs.

Recorded between August 2003 and April 2004, Heart Like a River is Ida’s first record in four years and released on their new home, Polyvinyl Records. Ida present everything we love to hear from the band — amazing harmonies that never get old against lush arrangements that leave you aching in the best possible way. Ida slowly unfold Heart Like a River, enveloping you with an intimate melancholy that directs you to roll along with tracks like the sensitive, vocal brass sound of “Mine,” the lightly syncopated, “Written on My Face,” and the hypnotic “The Morning.” “599″ is one track on Heart Like a River that stands out as the highlight, pointing us to an area that Ida should explore in the future. Combining the touch of post-rock leanings that Braille Night had and the slowcore edge that is always present in Ida’s music with a hint of shoegaze, “599″ swirls along like Swervedriver with less pedal hopping and Velour 100 with even more earnestness. Ida continues to create slow, sad music that maintains interesting depth within the ache. Heart Like a River is an hour-long, heartbreaking experience that is a wonderful return for the brave Ida. – David Serra
