Sliced-up punk with fire and vigor -- we think there's nothing "typical" about it!
Label: KOCH Records / Entertainment One Distribution

Skank has two meanings and in 1979 the Slits parodied both, wearing little more than mud on their infamous album cover while merging punk and reggae in a gawky fashion that has remained a cool touchstone ever since. Vocalist Ari Up, guitarist Viv Albertine and bassist Tessa Pollitt (along with male drummer Budgie), working with Linton Kwesi Johnson producer Dennis Bovell, used the multi-racked spacial separations of dub to hector, taunt, scream and insinuate their gleeful feminist critiques from every possible angle.

The Slits weren't, however, melodists (Lilliput/Kleenex, who spoke a similarly atonal dialect, at least had the excuse of being Swiss). Arguably, though, that's the Slits 'appeal: you don't fully absorb their tracks as much as glean them in fierce fragments. "It came completely out of nowhere, this weird, self-taught organic thing," Albertine would later recall. "As we became more aware, we didn't want to follow male rhythms and structures." Still, it's nice to have the addition here of the Motown standard "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," so you can appreciate exactly how the Slits were rewriting pop: turning monologue into dialogue, rendering the familiar strange, imagining not crossover but crossings over and out.

Leave Brainiac out of this

iSmellBubblegum

OK, first of all Cut is a great album (of course), and I recently invested in the 2 CD Deluxe Edition, which, while possibly overkill, contains some nice early versions and Peel Sessions of these songs. Anyway... no one named Mark Cameron Boyd was ever in the great '90s band Brainiac (and Brainiac did not yet exist at the time of this album, plus I'd bet they were fans of The Slits). So leave Brainiac out of this, please. In fact, fans of Cut should probably check them out, if they haven't already.

An Old Favorite

nortonnels

I first discovered the Slits from an interview with Frank Zappa. Frank was discussing the sad state of music in the late '70's, but did mention a few bands he actually like, the Slits being one of them. There's nothing terribly innovative about this album, but it truly represents what was going on at the time through simple songs with an attitude.

A strange and wonderful band

They don't sound like anyone else, mixing ska, girl groups, and skittish post-punk. Check out their cover of "I heard it through the grape vine". If you like it, you'll like the record.

Way the Hell Better than Brainiac

HechsenduchSchoenauer

Dickless musical footnote to a footnote mcameronboyd wrote: "Nice areolas! Now get out!... Worthless trim band tripe." What he meant to say was "Hey, everybody! I was in a marginally interesting band that no one listens to anymore! Notice that! I am iconoclastic!" By the way, are you Mark Cameron Boyd, the creator of HILARIOUSLY literal "text-based art?" ("Oooh, he knows the word 'discourse'! He's read Derrida!") Because you would think a professor of anything whatsoever would have more sense than to post something so casually and moronically sexist under his own name.

Classic Alternative Album

jeffypop

This one of the best albums of the late 70's early 80's. If your 1980's is all about Lene Lovich and Echo and the Bunnymen, more that 80's than Madonna and Boy George, you will love this album. Typical Girls was on every cool art bar's jukebox back in the day, it's a classic! The Slits have a truly unique sound that has withstood the test of time.

By Goner Records

For the last 18 years, Goner Records -- both the store and the label -- has been ground zero for all that is great, garagey and hooky-as-hell. So it's no surprise that their station is going to be full of gritty goodness, both from their own label vaults and the artists that inspired them. So dive into the world of Goner, and read more about them in our label profile. more »

They Say All Media Guide

Almost as well-known for its cover (the three Slits are half-naked and covered in mud) as for its music, Cut is an ebullient piece of post-punk mastery that finds the Slits’ interest in Caribbean and African rhythms smoothly incorporated into their harsher punk rock stylings. Ari Up’s wandering voice (a touch like Yoko Ono) might be initially off-putting, but not so much so that it makes listening to the record difficult. Six tracks are revamped from earlier Peel Sessions and sound better for the extra effort (especially “New Town” and “Love und Romance”). With its goofy charm, gleeful swing and sway, and subtle yet compelling libertarian feminism, this is one of the best records of the era. – John Dougan
