Disappointing

thelittlefield

Ah yes, this is why I'm careful of new projects by bands I used to be fans of. Sure, The Promise Ring's last album was pretty spectacular, but this LP has nothing on that record. After the first 4 tracks, it got so bad I was cringing the rest of the way through. Most of the songs on the album drifted so close to 'cutesy pop' that it became too much for me to bear. It wouldn't bother me that it was so upbeat and happy, but the songs weren't even catchy... they were just ultra-repetitive and dull. Just when you're expecting a great chorus with lots of drive, you instead get a redundant, semi-driving chorus that falls flat. Also, track 6 and track 11 have practically the same chorus... for shame.

I only really like one song...

The first song, "the window is the door" is really good, I wish the rest of the album was more like that. But hey you might like the rest of it.

Pure indie rock joy

Did you know the Promise Ring broke up? They did it so quietly, you wouldn't have known it. Which would have been a totaly loss, if it hadn't given birth to Maritime. Davey and Dan from Promise Ring and Eric from The Dismemberment Plan join forces on this upbeat gem. If you catch them live, you may also see Mike Kinsella on guitar (of the one-man band Owen). Great sound. Typical obscure yet pleasing Von Bohlen lyrics -- do they really mean something?

Amazing ...

ralle

positiv songs surrounded by melancholy ballads building a 'hits only' - album. The piano, e-guitar and a pleasant voice combines in perfect harmony - your girlfriend will love this too! Favs: "If All My Days Go By", "A Night Like This", "Someone Has To Die" Similar artists: "Badly Drawn Boy", "Aqualung", "Tiger Lou", "Beautiful south"
