before Heavenly were Heavenly, they were Talulah Gosh. and they were great. this is as cute as it can be, punk and power pop melted together with that 60s girl group sound all over it. best tracks are 5,6, 11, 12, 15.... well, all of it!

It’s a Mod, Mod, Mod, Mod World

By Tobi Vail, Contributor

When I was 16, Calvin Johnson (K Records) asked me to drum for Beat Happening on their upcoming U.K.tour. I asked my parents if it was OK for me to drop out of high school and go on tour. My dad said it was, under one condition: I had to prove that I could support myself. He arranged for me to stay with my grandparents, where I did piecework in a cucumber field owned by… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Everything Talulah Gosh ever recorded — all 25 tracks worth — is assembled on Backwash, a superb collection of twee pop at its finest. Unlike many of their shambling co-conspirators, the Goshes crafted music surprising in its complexity; “Talulah Gosh” flows smoothly from a gentle bridge into an adrenalized chorus, “Bringing Up Baby” wraps gossamer harmonies around a syncopated rhythm, and the brilliant “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction (Thank God)” sports a Byrds-worthy jangle riff. Similarly, beneath the cuddly, sweetness-and-light surface lurks a dark edge; “My World’s Ending” is an aggressive tearjerker, while “Break Your Face” is as corrosive as its title. – Jason Ankeny
