overlooked/underrated

Yoss

love quannum, had half of these tracks on a mixtape before without realizing what album they were from. Vibe is laid back, positive and fun. Some tracks may take while to grow on you, it's less lyric'heavy, more soulful, subtle. There are as many of my favorite tracks on this one as there are on all of the 'Greatest Bumps' Start out with 'Concentration' (J5 Collaboration) and 'I Changed My Mind' The latter one is comparable in quality and style to 'Lady Tek No'. I love most of them actually. Not crazy bout El-P's rhymes (though the beats on the track are very good)on track 11, and the charles manson ref. by Gift of Gab on track 2 i find offensive and uncalled for .."Charles Mans my man.." ?! what? But other than those personal points of contention, i would highly recommend this, especially to anyone already a Quannum fan. (oop, and oh yeah, agree about skipping mic breaks, it's just lateef talking randomness)

Forget the Mic Breaks

I rarely download only a portion of an album, but the "Mic Break" tracks are lame FAKE radio station mic breaks. They're just silly. The rest of the album is great.

They Say All Media Guide

A label-compilation project showcasing the varied and growing talents of the rejuvenated Solesides crew, now known as Quannum, Quannum Spectrum represents the unparalleled ambition of one of underground rap’s most respected collectives. Though the critics have given DJ Shadow most of the attention, Quannum Spectrum boasts excellent productions and intricate rapping from a half-dozen important figures, including Chief Xcel and Gift of Gab (from Blackalicious), Lateef the Truth Speaker and Lyrics Born (from Latyrx), plus — for one track — guest producer El-P. Opening with the groovy Quannum/Jurassic 5 soundclash “Concentration,” Quannum Spectrum works through over a dozen wildly diverse tracks, subtly reinforcing the concept of a free-form late-night radio show (it’s occasionally broken up by spoken-word meanderings by “host” Mack B. Dog). Though “Storm Warning” and “Divine Intervention” provide a one-two punch early on, the album really never lets up; midway, an irresistible groove number (“People Like Me” by Joyo Velarde) fades into a great Lyrics Born number (“I Changed My Mind”) that plays more like blues-rock than hip-hop. It’s easily one of the most effective statements of purpose ever produced in hip-hop, much less the underground rap scene. – John Bush
