Midnight Oil, Oils on the Water
2004 | Label: ABC Music / IODA

Growing out of the New South Wales pub circuit, Midnight Oil was Australia's answer to U2 in the late '80s and early '90s. This live album (recorded at an invitation-only show on a tiny island in the middle of Sydney Harbor in January, 1985) documents the band right before it broke internationally. Okay, so you won't get the 1987 hit "Beds Are Burning," but on the other hand the Oils are still in a lean, hungry mode, and all their political preoccupations — for causes such as nuclear disarmament, aboriginal rights and nature conservation — are already firmly in place. Fueled by an unmistakable sense of urgency and dominated by Peter Garrett's passionate vocals, the band shines bright on this recording's anthemic numbers.

Always Great Live

jonpadilla

Of all the bands I have seen live, the Oils were the best. This album reminds me the energy they would bring to their shows. It also reminds me that they were a great band, even before their most popular albums.

A great live band

steinib

They sound so much better live than on official album recordings. This is the proof. A fantastic album.

Not bad for a live album

EMUSIC-0022378C

I think live albums usually either really capture the sound of a band live or miss it completely. This one just seems to be OK. A nice run through their best tracks but I'd rather have the studio versions to be honest.

Fantastic

You guys weren't kidding... this really rocks. I know and love "Scream in Blue" (the other live Oils album here), but this one is tremendous.

This is a LIVE album

It's okay. But just about any of their studio albums is better. For devotees only. If you don't know the band, go out and buy Blue Sky Mining.

A Must Download

bwgentry

If you are an Oils fan, this alblum is a No-Brainer download--a unique, live album of their early music (although I like their later music as well).

Almost as great as the real thing

sanzorama

The Oils were an amazing live band even after long international tours would have taken the edge off of lesser bands; however, this album documents them at a peak in their career when that old cliche "on the brink of stardom" definitely applies. The AMG reviewer compares the Oils to U2; in terms of powerful live shows, they are both in my top 5, but this recording is better than any live U2 album I've ever heard. If you're even a minor Oils fan, if you've only heard and liked later stuff, just get it! It's definitely worth it.

One of the best live bands ever.

Most live albums suffer from a lack of energy, poor recording, apathetic performances, etc. The Oils recorded several and, honestly, they are one of the few bands that may fare BETTER on a live record than they do in the studio. Sure, this record predates their international success, but a crucial point that needs to be made is that most of the Oils' best work was recorded BEFORE America noticed them (and anyone who dug into the back catalog and found the magnificent "Head Injuries" knows EXACTLY what I mean) - in other words, what you're getting here is really more of a Best Of collection than you'd otherwise get, despite the absence of the band's hit singles in the U.S. A very worthwhile set of downloads and I rarely recommend live albums.

Great Creative Energy

jewlz

1983 and 1985 spawned some of the Oils' most vibrantly creative music, plunging into territory not seen by those who have only experienced their worldwide hit albums. This show captures some of their best material, in a live setting that brings extra energy, without dumbing down the arrangements. Check out Sleep and Harrisburg for starters. I originally had this concert on a duplicated VHS tape, and I wish the DVD would be released on NTSC so I can buy it. But for now, I am happy to purchase an audio version.

Pure Oils Magic

limp27

this is a great recording and as an aussie i have always loved their music and political stance!!!!(even through i am a bit young to have seen them in full swing) like the first poster said it doesn't contain the big name traks from well known recordings, But is easily pound for pound some of their best work! Peter Garret for PM (save us from little jonny the fund smugler)
