If you have to ask, you probably can't afford it.
Mulgrew Miller is pretty much single handedly leading the charge in contemporary jazz if you exclude Wayne Shorter. Both men matriculated from the Art Blakey conservatory of music. But Mulgrew Miller is available here and Wayne Shorter is not. (Update: Wayne Shorter is now here but I still favor Mulgrew Miller). This music is for me the definition of what contemporary jazz is and should be. On this release several of the tunes are catchy and infectious but remain solidly true to the bebop form. Like a fine wine, real jazz takes 30 or 40 years to age and become properly appreciated. I think the Mulgrew Miller releases available here qualify. My favorite tune here is "The Sequel" but "Go East Young Man" runs a close second. Both tunes could become standards (but that's for the musicians to decide). I just hope I am around in 30 years to help pop the cork on this one.
