The Pillcrushers, Welcome To The World
Label: Bergen Basement Music

NYC's Pillcrushers cite big-name rockers — the Beatles, the Stones, Nirvana — and important cult heroes — the Velvet Underground, Wilco, Badfinger — as the main influences on their mid-'60s and early-'70s pop-inspired sound. They tell no lies. But this isn't just a group with a groovy record collection. Singer Greg Beshers, who's performed with Velvets drummer Moe Tucker and current singer-songwriters Mary McBride and Mark Bacino, is a skilled pop craftsman who transforms his avid love for pop's past with his natural knack for multi-tracked harmonies and electric guitars. (Big Star might be the hip reference, but there's enough Roy Thomas Baker and Boston to please radio programmers).

"Something Right" sways with the alt-country authority of today's Brooklyn cowboys but Beshers doesn't usually stray west, instead relying on the spirited groove of, say, Ben Folds without the tongue planted as deeply in cheek, as he searches for timeless melodies ("Beautiful Release"). It's a tough row to hoe and sometimes the quest settles into blandness (the generic mid-tempo Americana anthem "Time to Run"). Yet with its whine toward California, the album's sprightly opener "Is It True" deserves a spot on The O.C. and a track as… read more »

willy10

this album realy doesn't fit into the "punk' style because to me it would be better classified as "70's" style rock. whatever catagory you want to put it in,it is great. i put this album in my saves for a later download.you can definitely tell that this band has done it's homework. oh! by the way - did i say they are great ?

Great album!

Imagine if the Gin Blossoms were not depressing and were capable of being happy - this, in my opinion, describes The Pillcrushers first album. This band has potential to become a big hit in coming years.

Which way to Gaytown?

SirBinskyIII

Just kiddin'. Upon first listen, I thought this did sound like cheesy O.C. band. After the double guitar melody came in on "is It True"; however, I started to realize there are some guts in this pop. There's a serious Tuesday's Gone sound there. I haven't made my way all the way through yet, but so far I'm pretty impressed.

For 60's Lovers

NightFly

I really like this band..then again they appeal to my 60's sensibilities and they are not very contemporary...which for me is refreshing...To many young bands try so hard to be "different" before they get down the fundamentals..These guys should show a really good progression in their future efforts..I look forward to it.

Can't Quite Do It

SlickWillie

Too much pop and not enough indie for me. I'll pass.

Like it...

...and I recommend it. Very approachable, clean sounding pop. First song is a keeper...typical East Coast envy-type lyrics. Nice.

i hate Sex and Candy - and this song.

UnknownXPleasure

The review claims that this free track deserves a place on the OC, and if that's not the most damning praise you could dump on a crappy track like this, I don't know what is. Oh, maybe that is sounds like an outtake from a really old Weezer session, minus the edge. Or who ever it was that liked sex and candy. maroon 5? I can't bother to remember. Wow, i like the idea of promoting 'indie' music, but when it's just sub-par top 40, what's the point? the only reason these guys don't have a Sony deal is because they're too unattractive for a video..
