The Man and his Piano

Alzati

This is stripped down art, the essence of Dr. John. Not that his shows with a full band are not as good, but this lets you here him in his element without any padding. Get this and the other volume, it is a real foundation type collection to have.

Goes Down Easy

MCWillie

When you hear this album you realize it was fate that Dr. John got his finger shot off and turned from the guitar to the piano. This album is a joy!

There's Still One More Y'all A'int Got

If you like this, then y'all must check out the Good Doctor with Donald Harrison Jr. on DHjr's 1991 "Indian Blues" (which e-music has). Dr. John plays and sings with an excellent N.O.jazz quartet and the Mardi Gras Indians too. It is very much a companion piece to Dr. John's great 1992 "Goin' Back to New Orleans" release and a must have.

Excellent Solo Piano

Ragabash

I bought this hard-copy CD many, many years and never tire of it. I guess now that it's here with four extra tracks I'll have to download them as well (sigh...!) And what's all this "Volume 1" business? The original CD made no mention of that. That implies there might be a "Volume 2" or more lying around somewhere ...? If so, count me in to download these as well. This is a stripped-down Dr. John playing what is in essence a potted history of solo jazz piano. There's all sorts of styles on display here. For once the persona of the great voodoo king Dr John does not dominate the record: it's the music that gets his utmost attention - and grabs yours. Strongly recommended, fine playing, good music, well recorded - what more could one ask?

New Orleans Piano Professors

By John Morthland, eMusic Contributor

They played for (often lavish) tips in the bordello parlors of turn-of- the-century Storyville at the same time jazz was being born. They had huge repertoires and kept the music "hot" and rhythmic, to help make sure patrons stayed in the mood. Thanks to the "piano professors," as they were called, the 88's became the primary instrument in New Orleans music. Jelly Roll Morton, one of the fathers of jazz (he'll tell you he created… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Dr. John was always respected as a consummate pianist, but he didn’t make a solo, unaccompanied piano record until 1981′s Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack. The wait was well worth it. His music had always been impressive, but this is the first time that his playing had been put on full display, and it reveals that there’s even more depth and intricacies to his style than previously expected. More importantly, the music simply sounds good and gritty, as he turns out a set of New Orleans R&B (comprised of both originals and classics) that is funky, swampy, and real. [The 2002 reissue adds four songs that weren't included on the original CD release: "Careless Love," "Deep Blues," "Ti-Na-Na," and "Dorothy (Take 2)."] – Thom Owens
