Yuck
I like this band, but this album just annoyed me to no end. It's self indulgent, overly clever, and just doesn't sound good. Reminded me of bad Beatles imitations. Sorry ...

...my love for this album. Sure, the track names are all wrong-- (I noticed when I was like, 'hey, this song isn't about a miniature philosopher! And this one isn't about a grandfather!') but other than that tech problem, it's amazing. The songs are timeless and beautiful, saccharine and funny, and yet authentic. Track 9 is heartbreaking in the tenderest way, and track 11 could be my life's soundtrack, if only that didn't make me sound so pathetic. The Nickee Coco song is hysterical. Almost every song on this album is pitch-perfect. The sound reminds me of late Beatles/Beach Boys... I LOVE THIS ALBUM!!
I'm a huge of Montreal fan but I just can't digest anything from their early, early years. It's all over the place and missing their hooks.
Critical to the success of Sufjan Stevens "Illinoise" was a combination of three things: endearing vocals, compelling stories, and depth of quality tracks - Of Montreal's 'Gay Parade' qualifies on all three aspects. Of course the styles of the album are worlds apart, but the comparisons can certainly be made: both albums are a collection of stories linked by an almost tangible world-setting. 'The Gay Parade' is carefree, unabashed, and timeless. Nickee Coco and the Invisible Tree perhaps demonstrates these facets best. It is a playful Rip Van Winkle-esque tale that, as it progresses, grows in absurdity and enjoyability. I highly recommend the album for all indie fans.
Absolutley great. eMusic did mix up the track list a bit. Here's how it should read. 1-7 are correct as listed. 8. I'd Be A Yellow Feathered Loon (which emusic has listed as Y the Quale and . . .) 9. The Autobiographical Grandpa (which emusic has listed as Yellow Feathered Loon) 10. The Miniature Philosopher (which emusic has listed as Autobiographical Grandpa) 11. My Friend Will Be Me (which emusic has listed as Miniature Philosopher) 12-16 Correct as listed. All the tracks are there, you're getting the whole album but somehow they added a new track title and omitted another, but all the songs are there. Download the album it's great. It has a sweet charm that isn't in their later work, that's not a bad thing, it's just a band in different phases, which is a good thing.
Question, not a review: the tracks here don't seem to coincide with the "official" tracklist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gay_Parade). Specifically, eMusic breaks "Y the Quale and Vaguely Bird Noisily Enjoying Their Forbidden Tryst/I'd Be a Yellow Feathered Loon" into two tracks, and apparently leaves off "My Friend Will Be Me" and "Matt Bennett Is A Bender". iTunes also breaks the "Y/Loon" in two, then leaves off the former, but includes "My Friend Will Be Me". What's going on? Anyone know the "official" tracklist, and why the label decided to wank it around like this?
-"Hey, it's the march of the Gay Parade!!!" -"YES!!!" It will make you happy. . . even if you are suffering from an existential vacuum.
