Lyrics Born, Same !@#$ Different Day
Label: Quannum Projects / IODA

The appeal of remix albums is usually limited to fans who know the originals inside-out. But you don't need to be familiar with this Oakland rapper and sometime singer's stellar 2004 Later That Day… to appreciate what's going on here. With Lifesavas 'Jumbo, Halou, DJ Spinna and Morcheeba providing new beds for Lyrics Born's calm, burring rhymes and a handful of guests jumping on top of already-existing tracks, Same !@#$ has a more casual R&B feel than the original, bolstered by the clutch of new and previously uncollected songs, particularly the pair of showcases for vocalist Joyo Velarde. Best moment: "Callin 'Out Remix," a Bay Area rap bridge-crossing featuring guest verses from E-40 and Casual.

cool, but confusing

braynpower

so figure people might like to know that the stereo mc remix and the full track titles (in other words a better version of the album....) can be had with the album called quannum projects. As to why this is, maybe the emusic people have been drinking too much, or maybe I have been drinking too much, or not enough, I can't remember how that works, but I remain confused.....

Laid back, funny, creative

Totalitarianism

I am not a big hip hop fan at all, but I saw Lyrics Born live and he was so fun, that I went out and bought this album. His lyrics on some songs (do that there) are hilarious and whimsical, on others are typical "I'm a better rapper than you are" (I'm just raw), and on others are pretty much love songs. All across the cd, LB's laid back delivery makes it all work beautifully. Live, his band gives a lot more of a funk/soul feel, and there's some of that in this album, but LB is rapping over mostly beats, not live instruments here. I highly recommend this album.

Lyrics Born spent years, in front of the mike and behind the boards, preparing his solo debut, Later That Day…. High irony, then, that its remix album — released just one year later — is a much more exciting and engaging listen. Most importantly, more and better producers are heard here. For a rapper, Lyrics Born is a solid producer, and he infused his album with plenty of earthy jams, but after a cast of genuine underground hip-hop heavyweights got hold of these basic vocal tracks, they provided listeners with something special. Gifted with the first two productions, Jumbo of Lifesavaz has a special role, and his hooky versions of “Hello” and “Pack Up” (the latter with new verses from KRS-One and Dilated Peoples’ Evidence) outperform the originals by a wide margin. Dan the Automator shows up for the mildly menacing “I’m Just Raw,” an amusing game of the dozens that shows Lyrics Born using his head to outwit challengers (but unwisely recycling the Stuart Smalley slogan “Goshdarnit, people like me” for the chorus). Young Einstein contributes a Jackson 5 groove on “Do That There” that’s just as fun as any of his Ugly Duckling productions, and remixes of “I Changed My Mind” from Stereo MC’s and DJ Spinna make it easy for the vinyl-phobic to pick up a great pair of LB tracks. The disc’s only disappointment is the new track “Over You,” a desultory slow blues featuring a collaboration between Lyrics Born and DJ Shadow (plus LB’s wife, Joyo Velarde, on vocals). [Some versions of the record also included a bonus DVD, featuring three videos, a documentary featurette, and live footage from a 2004 tour by LB and the Quannum family.] – John Bush
