Big sounds from this Little Rock band

RidgeBardo

I'm not quite sure if the entire album is about claustrophobia, but I do know that any fear of little spaces I may once have held has now been assuaged. Contained within their stellar second album, the American Princes have forged a sharper soundimage through stronger musicianship and more concentrated songwriting. They've taken off from where they left their first album _WE Are the People, plowing steamfaced ahead. Working again with mixmaster Marcus Lowe, they've created something great, even the while struggling with a new understanding of it. The journey tackles death, boredom, and sex with a stained virility--remaining stoically wedged betwixt sky and cement. Brilliance seems to abound on little spaces. And I think they're beginning to outgrow their own little spaces. Ridge Bardo (08.06.04) www.sctas.com (for full review)

If Little Spaces, the debut full-length by American Princes, is any indication, Little Rock indeed rocks — in an aggressive, indie style. Commencing with the soulful, Spoon meets Afghan Whigs feel of “I Want to Be Good,” such aspirations yield scorchers like “Rock n Roll Singer” and “The Sun Never Sets,” where jagged riffs and chaotic harmonies collide like a five-car pileup. Co-lead vocalists/guitarists David Slade and Collins Kilgore don’t always slay, however, with “Man’s World” sounding like a sluggish, atonal rant. They don’t always shred, either, as the acoustic platform of “In the Dark” and the heartfelt, liquor-drenched “Providence, R.I.” exhibit with stellar results. Simply put: a mostly kickass band. – John D. Luerssen
