This Man Sings from his Heart

NightTrane

R.L. Burnside had 5 or more family members killed by violent deaths in the neighborhood he grew up in..Do not judge a man until you walked in his shoes..and what makes RL so great is that he could sing and reveal the darkness in his soul.. Yes not every body had a great life..this is music from a dark place in his heart, but he was willing to share it warts and all.. He was truly a great artist..Listen to the real blues..Download this now ..not for the faint of heart.

R.L. Burnside

HobbitTr

I just read that Robert Lee Burnside, musician, born November 23 1926; died September 1 2005. This from the Guardian in a wonderful obituary entitled simply "R L Burnside." In the article he told British journalist Richard Grant: "Once they get going on this crack, they'll do anything. I was on the chain gang and I think they should bring it back. They treat prisoners too easy now. People don't mind going to prison. I'd make 'em pick cotton in the fields, like the old days. Two hundred pounds a day or you get whupped. I'd work 'em like slaves, work 'em to death if I had to. That'll stop a man from doin' wrong, I reckon." His epitaph could say he was indifferent to all but his music...

Welcome to Mississippi. This is the sound you would be likely to hear in any juke joint hosting the talents of the real-life Burnside family band. What you can’t see on this disc is the picture of them grinning ear-to-ear as they play — or the sight of R.L.’s son Dwayne duck-walking while his dad smiles and nods to friends across the floor. His other son, Joseph, would likely be pounding out the solid bassline, while his son-in-law Calvin Jackson proudly presided over the drums. No, you can’t see it but you can hear it if you listen closely. This set was recorded live at Syd’s in Oxford, MS. As for the music, it’s rough, real, and one-of-a-kind … the way blues should be. – Larry Hoffman
