track "cracklin' water" is stunning. "rainbow" walks a very fine line between telling a story and deep, troubling emotional content. 68

I bought this as a Giant Sand fan, but ended up most impressed by Lisa Germano's songs here, especially "If I Think of Love", "Tom, Dick and Harry" and "It's a Rainbow", which is a song you could play as an intervention for an alcoholic friend. Howe's songs ("Leather" and "Never See It Coming") are good but low key. "OP8" is an instrumental. The Lee Hazlewood cover ("Sand") is sort of a novelty: Germano and Gelb switch the genders in this duet. The Neil Young cover ("Round and Round") wouldn't have been out of place on a Mazzy Star record, and I mean that as a high compliment.
