Adrian Belew kinda unplugged

jodbirch

This is a really good collection of what sounds to me like re-workings of some Adrian Belew classics. He has a great melodic sense that burns his songs into your unconcious. I almost guarantee, after 3 listens you'll have half of these songs running through your head constantly for a week...and that's in no way a bad thing. Belew's guitar wizardry, coupled with his honest lyrics and great melodies make him quite a unique artist. Hope that didn't sound too pretentious. Just download this and see what I mean.

A bit uneven

Quint

Having 16 tracks, there's a bit of uneven material here. Some of the songs (Dinosaur, The Lone Rhinocerous, Men In Helicopters) are outstanding, with three or four others just below this. The rest are always interesting, always better than radio-pap. Worth a listen.

I love this collection! (except for some of the more "standard" tracks) but I love "Return of the Chicken"! It's a wonderful sound collage. Adrian is not afraid to go out on a limb -- he does it on a regular basis.

Outstanding album!

Sirenbrian

This is a great album! Belew's skills as a guitarist and vocalist are well displayed. My favourites are Dinosaur, Men in Helicopters and Three of a Perfect Pair. You can skip Return of the Chicken, though...a very out of place collection of random sounds. Interesting once I suppose, but nothing like the rest of it.

This single disc features material from two acoustic albums previously available but somewhat hard to find, so completists should beware. If you don’t already have those titles, this album offers an interesting consideration of Belew’s considerable talents as a musician, composer and all-around wit. His pop songs are terrific (just listen to “Men in Helicopters” or “Young Lions”), but his more adventurous work (like “Three of a Perfect Pair”) is also winning. There are a couple of musique concrète pieces, which are akin to sonic collages, that may annoy some listeners, but they are an essential element to this great, inventive talent. – Tim Sheridan
