They Say All Media Guide

This compilation features music from 14 of the nominees at the 2003 Stellar Awards, the gospel music industry’s annual gala. It’s a lively mix, and one that showcases modern gospel’s spirited blend of both tradition and crossover. Dottie Peoples “Closet Religion” — taken from her incredible 2002 live recording, Churchin’ With Dottie — is raw and vibrant, while Andraé Crouch’s “Soon and Very Soon” is a rousing organ and piano-led choir number. At the same time, the slick grooves and honeyed vocals of Out of Eden’s “Meditate” draw liberally from mainstream groups like TLC or Destiny’s Child. Other highlights of Stellar Award Hits 2003 include “I Gotta Believe” from Yolanda Adams, and the rousing gospel/electric blues hybrid of the Texas Boyz’ “Pressing On.” Overall, a handy overview of the year in praise and worship for any gospel aficionado. – Johnny Loftus
