Superb

There is nothing "just ok" about this album. This shit is fucking great. Yes, it's full of beautiful acoustics, but these stand out as much as they do because they're juxtaposed with raw-as-shit distorted electronic textures.Download the whole thing.

IRISH ROCK

EMUSIC-1967

Unlike U2,The Frames did not and still do not get the attention they deserve. Some would say that's ok...popularity will ruin them. No way. Another Irish bad with not much attention Hot House Flowers are worth looking for. As for the Frames this cd is very moody and that's what makes it a classic.

I love the Frames, and Glen Hansard puts out great music (try "The Swell Season" here on emusic - awesome), but this album just isn't very good. The first track is great, but everything else sounds similar and unremarkable.

having discovered the Frames via "Once", as others are bound to do, I've been spot-checking through the various Frames albums, and so far this is the one I'm most drawn to. The main reason is the gorgeous acoustics of the album. How much of this is Albini? I'm used to him getting great acoustics into grating music, but here you feel the subtlety of the instruments in a gorgeous way. -- In "Once" a lot of the songs have a freshness that comes from the circumstances, while on the albums they seem to dip a little farther into a sort of histronic hush. Some of the songs on this album lean that way for me, but at least half of the album steers clear. -- Songs I've liked best so far are the opening track, "Lay Me Down" (best and most representative track), "Santa Maria", "Headlong", and "Mighty Sword".

I saw these guys at the New Pornographers/Calexico show and had downloaded "Burn the Maps" to hear what they sounded like. I found it OK pop, but not especially remarkable. They were so much better live - & the best stuff they played at their show was from this album, especially "Lay Me Down" which is a sweet little tune.

If you like "Burn the Maps," you need to download this album immediately. Of the Frames back catalogue (there are 3 more studio albums not on emusic), this is the one that most closely resembles "BTM." The songs are a bit more mellow than earlier releases, a bit more moody, a bit darker, but gorgeous just the same. My absolute favorite band . . .

They Say All Music Guide

For the Birds opens with “In the Deep Shade,” an understated instrumental that sets the mood for the rest of the album. Despite some relatively peppy numbers such as “Fighting on the Stairs,” the wailing guitar sound on songs such as “Early Bird” and “Santa Maria,” and the expectations some listeners may have for an album recorded with Craig Ward (dEUS) and Steve Albini (Pixies, Nirvana, Rapeman), this is primarily a gentle, slow, and melancholic album. It features melodic, folk-influenced rock songs (somewhere in the general vicinity of Will Oldham and Nick Drake, for example) with clearly discernible instruments including mandolin, piano, violin, brushed drums, and softly strummed guitar, as well as vocals that manage to sound emotive even when they seem hushed. The band says in their liner notes that this was their first chance to record an album without having to “cater to people outside of the band”; consequently, For the Birds features less-commercial arrangements that allow the group to take a leisurely pace, use subtle dynamics and negative space, and gradually build emotional intensity over the course of a song instead of trying to hook listeners immediately. Of course, this is hardly the first band to try this type of approach, but Frames handle it gracefully. – Todd Kristel
