Ric Ocasek beefs up GbV’s famed lo-fi sound on this collection of radio-ready rock.
Label: TVT Records

After the GbVerde fiasco, Pollard assembled a new band and tried to take it to the next level. As is often the case when indie bands get the major label treatment, GbV's foray into the big-time failed to win them many new fans, and turned off some of their old ones. That's too bad, because Do the Collapse is one of the band's best. Producer Ric Ocasek beefs up the sound, and adds some of those puzzling dinky-doink sounds (keyboards, extra percussion, etc.) that radio-ready rock is apparently supposed to have, but for the most part his shining extra light on Pollard's songs makes them glitter rather than shrink from the glare. Even the power-ballad “Hold On Hope,” a blatant attempt to sell out that was derided by fans and disowned by Pollard, has a certain charm. In a different era, Do the Collapse would have burned up the radio dial and won GbV first-class tickets to Budokan.

Who are Milner and Erlewhine?

Nyabinghi

You can critcize this for it's beefy production and LoFi it's not but still chock full of Pollard nuggets. Who can deny Things I Will Keep, Surgical Focus, Liquid Indian, or Dragons Awake. I love the guitar crunch of Optical Hopscotch and Strumpet Eye. Not Pollards best batch but pertneer perfect.

12 Credits Or 16 Credits? You Decide!

wredfright

For some reason, this album is listed twice on EMusic. One is a 12-credit download and the other is a 16-credit download. If you're just downloading a track or two then it doesn't matter, but if you want the whole record, do the math and find the 12 credit one!

i hate to admit it ...

... but I love "Hold On Hope." It's Guided by Voices' "Everybody Hurts," but while I skip "EH" every single time I listen to REM's otherwise great "Automatic for the People," I look forward to this sappy, poppy song by one of my favorite indie bands. This album's no Alien Lanes, but "In Stitches" and others are worth a few listens.

Good variety

Tyrante

Yes, it's a more-polished Guided By Voices. Lots of variety, though, ranging from the mainstream-rock-gone-right "Teenage FBI" to the grungey "Zoo Pie" to the witty acoustic "Dragons Awake". It's no indie masterpiece, but it's good.

some Pollard fans love it; others loathe it

Tud

Even the most devoted Robert Pollard followers will continue to debate the merits of this record for years to come. Regardless of your stance on this album, it does stick out like a sore thumb in the Guided by Voices catalog as their first (but not final) attempt at making a complete "big rock" sounding album, this time with Cars mastermind Ric Ocasek in the producer's chair. To many, this album is simply too polished, lacking the charm -- and some would say, the strong melodies -- of GBV's earlier material; to still many others, Ocasek's stewardship adds just the right amount of gloss in taking GBV out of the basement and into a more contemporary sound. Fans from both camps can agree that the album has at least a few standout tracks, from "Things I Will Keep" and "Surgical Focus" to the 68-second Old-School-GBV-style blast of "An Unmarketed Product" up through the pulsating synth of "Teenage FBI."
