Best record? Maybe...they're ALL good

tkdcoach

While I can't agree that this is the BEST record by The BJM (see Take It From the Man!), the qualitative measure is unnecessary. The BJM merely put out their usual groove to groove excellence, and do it record after record, particularly from 1995-2004. This is one of the best bands of our era no matter where you start, so dive in!

NOW I get it

timabouttown

All the hype around BJM made me not want to listen to them at all, and when I listened, I wasn't impressed. It wasn't the Stones sound -- whatever; turns out that lots of people were influenced by the Stones. It was that they didn't sound like much of anyone, and the songs just weren't there. And then I come across this one...well, well, well! Great songs, great performances, and a strong, singular identity. Love it. Highly recommended to lovers of the classic rock sound, and anyone trying to figure out what the BJM fuss is about this. Get this. You'll get it.

Like an entire summer of electric mornings after

SelfRisinMojo

Anton comes down just enough to make an album that stands up song for song to repeated listenings. Easily one of the top 50 albums of the last 35 years.

Just get it

bloodyslushy

This is definatley their most solid album, and most accessable to the mainstream. It has everything from dark brooding songs (I've been waiting), to upbeat (Spun), and rockish (Wisdom). If you like any of these songs, you'll probably like the whole album. Just get it, and support crazy people like Anton.

BJM's Best Album

Rolle'

Yes if you watch DIG! you will think that Anton Newcomb is not only strung out, but just wacked out of his mind when recording this album. However the movie fails to depict how amazing this album really is. I own all of BJM's albums and this is one of the best and most straight forward albums from them. Strung Out In Heaven is definately in my top 10 list of must have albums.

They Say All Media Guide

It’s with typical perversity that the Brian Jonestown Massacre makes the leap from the indie ghetto into the majors with their least immediate, most restrained record to date; given time to sink in, however, Strung Out in Heaven proves as engaging as their past efforts, with a focus and cohesiveness often lacking from their more visceral work. Settling into a blissfully psychedelic drift, the album opts not for the Stones-inspired raunch of before but for Byrds-like guitars, muffled drums and pulsating Hammond organ lines, all topped off by Anton Newcombe’s half-stoned, half-shamanic vocals; thanks to standout tracks like “Going to Hell,” “Wasting Away” and “Maybe Tomorrow,” the cumulative impact makes for the BJM’s most mature outing yet, evoking a kind of narcotic euphoria perfectly in keeping with the album’s title. – Jason Ankeny
