Fantastic compilation from a wide range of talented artists. My only warning is that Heard's music is so widely interpreted on this album that there are bound to be tracks more interesting to any given listener and other tracks much less interesting -- musical styles range from super twangy country to alternative, with rare gems by several artists, including Chagall Guevara and DA. But, it's all good. Just sample to find what you like best.
Love the words to "Strong Hand of Love" and also love the guitar work on this song.
While not every track here is a gem, enough are to make it outstanding. Buddy & Julie Miller's take on the title track is simply amazing; and Bruce Cockburn's "Strong Hand of Love", Ramona Silver's "Remarks to Mr. McLuhan", and Dan Russell's "I Just Wanna Get Warm" are also among my favorites.
I believe it would be safe to suggest that this is the best tribute album of all time, perhaps one of the best compilations imaginable. Mark Heard's songwriting was always on top and these artists treat his songs with respect and dignity. What makes it even more impressive is that many of the songs' tones are completely altered from Heard's original conceptions. Excellent production, performances, and songwriting make this a phenomonal album. It belongs in every collection, especially for listeners with a keen ear for Americana.
