A labor-intensive shoegaze record perfect for misty mornings and hazy sunsets.
2004 | Label: Clairecords / IODA

Philadelphia's Highspire has crafted just one record in four years, but it's a winner. The disc features lazy, THC-soaked rhythms reminiscent of early Verve, but colored with the ethereal qualities of Slowdive and the hooks of Medicine. Your Everything, is perfect for misty mornings and hazy sunsets. While it's undeniably imagistic and evocative, it's also nurturing, washing over the listener like bathwater. Most of the songs ("Until the Lights Go Down," "Fade in a Day") are linear and even-keeled, but there are some surprises as well. "Portsmouth" features a jaunty, jazzy bassline and "Verperbell" rides a backbeat reminiscent of early Charlatans UK. If Highspire can motivate themselves to record another disc, they could become newgazer darlings faster than you can say Isn't Anything.

To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised by this album, although I am not sure what I was expecting (I have to admit I picked it up because Highspire is from Philadelphia). It is a pretty seamless listening experience, complete with dense sonic landscapes that breathe and pulse. None of the songs are short (only two are under 4:00, with the bulk of them over 5:00), which gives the listener time to submerge themselves into it. Definitely worth checking out if you like some of the recent releases from the Church, and, for lack of a better term, the "newgazer" movement.
