Their best release
I don't think they ever bettered this EP, even, what... four LPs in now? This is great, and it's only five songs. Get to it.

I came to this band after seeing them live this year; Young Liars showcases some of their strongest writing, but lacks some of the punch of the current group (mostly due to the lack of acoustic drums). Satellite and Staring at The Sun are the most enduring standouts.
Impressive group that could go far. Great songs except for Mr. Grieves unless you're a fan of a cappella.
Staring at the Sun... amazing! And then you find a gospel version of The Pixies?! Why aren't you downloading this yet?
"Staring at the Sun" makes me want to scream.... Beautiful melody and harmonies. Music is pulsating, melancholy, driving, building, repetitive but constantly changing. I don't know if the album tracks are flesh or filler, but this EP is excellent.
Without doubt one of the best things I've heard for a very long time. I first heard track 4, Young Liars, on a radio show on BBC 6Music. As soon as the track started with the loping beat and beautiful vocal harmonies I knew I was hearing something new! The sound was distinctly original, utterly soulful and profoundly moving. After hearing 'Young Liars' I immediately bought the EP of the same name - and boy was I blown away all over again! The EP was on constant repeat at home, at work, in the car and on my portable. For a while the Young Liars track was my favourite. But then through some musical osmosis 'Staring At The Sun' was the standout track! It evokes so many different feelings and has such gorgeous and imaginative lyrical content. I urge you to buy this and listen to it, it will touch you, it certainly did me! 5 stars!
Some of you will get the connection, some will not. But I've been looking for a group that had the same feel as Tones on Tail. (And if you haven't checked them out - DO.) This is the closest I've heard and it's very good. TV On The Radio is not a clone of Tones, but they do have the same presence. Either you get me on that or you don't.
We live in some modern times, you know. Right now my girlfriend and I are watching a burned DVD while sitting on the bed with our laptops, surfing the internet with our home wi-fi connection and cordless trackball mice. It's totally lame, but whatever, you get my point. Anyway. I never thought that in the 21st century a band could forge a new style of music on their debut EP, and in just 5 songs. I mean, I hope for these things all the time, but does that ever pay off? Nope. Did it? Yessss. Just listen to the first track on Young Liars and try to tell me otherwise – unless you know of another band that seamlessly melded noisy, fuzzed out musical accompaniment with vocals doused in southern jazz and soul. And these songs are so distinct that you can't get these brilliant songs out of your head. I haven't even given their first full length (Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes) a listen, for fear of tainting this near-flawless EP.
'Young Liars' represents one of the most impressive balances between original song writing and great melodies you'll find on emusic. One of the best releases of the decade, totally unmissable.
The Promise of this EP remains unrealized in their first full-length. I would definately recommend checking this one out, for it's originality of nothing else.
