Evans at his finest

angler_s

This is a "must have" for Evans fans and a tribute to one of the best piano trios ever.

DON'T MISS THIS!

RickZee

All of your Evans favorites and versions that are comfortable and extended. You could cherry-pick this set but I suggest that the full set should be in your collection. Enjoy!

A few notes on best live jazz ever

Zhimbo

These recordings are well-known as some of the most-important live jazz ever recorded, I need hardly add to the litany. It's true that if you have Waltz For Debby and Live at the Village Vanguard, there's little new here. However, this does allow you to hear the music just as those in the audience did that long-ago Sunday afternoon and evening. In particular, the clunky, jarring, and obviously patched-on applause at the end of "Jade Visions" from the originally released recordings is now, thankfully, gone. Fans may want to download this version. I bought the "hard copy" version. The liner notes are good but hardly essential.

Some of the Best Jazz Ever

Coltrane

Yes, this is pretty much a repeast of what many of us have been listening to years and decades. But this is they way to get it if you don't have Waltz for Debby or Sunday at the Village Vanguard. Obviously, the discussion track probably aren't worth the download. But the music is all masterful and essential listening for anyone who claims to be a jazz fan.

It's not eMusic's fault

IowaJazz

Just to clarify, the interruption in Gloria's Step (take 1) is not a corrupt encoding on eMusic's end. It is present on the CD, and is the result of an electrical power failure during the actual recording. This glitch is the reason this take was not included in the Complete Riverside set.

Beware! Duplicates Ahead!

Saxaddict

If you already have "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" and "Waltz for Debby," then all you are missing from this compilation are the spoken-word tracks, "All of You (Take 1)" and "A Few Final Bars." If you have the "Complete Riverside Recordings," then you have all of the music tracks.

Bill Frisell’s Pan-Americana

By Kevin Whitehead

Bill Frisell, the singular and much admired/emulated jazz guitarist, is a case study in uncategorizability. As he's often said, in one form or another: First I was tagged as the ECM guy, then the downtown guy, then the Americana guy. In reality, those were all always the same guy. As early as the 1982 recordings for his debut on ECM, In Line — solos, overdubbed solos and duets with bassist Arild Andersen — there was this… more »
