Ladybug Mecca, Trip The Light Fantastic
Label: Nu-Paradigm Entertainment / INgrooves

Have you ever asked yourself "What happened to the girl from Digable Planets?" Talk about a hiatus! One of the most anticipated reunions in hip-hop outside the Fugees or A Tribe Called Quest actually happened earlier this year when the members of Digable Planets locked themselves in a room, worked out their problems and proceeded to tour Europe and start recording new material. Digable fans rejoice as there will be a new album in 2006, but for now check out Ladybug's solo offering filled with various musical styles and vibes. Similar to Lauryn Hill's solo after the Fugees breakup, Ladybug has decided to flex her vocal skills, with songs ranging from hip-hop to bossa nova, with a little neo-soul, rock and R&B all mixed in as well. It can be a little inconsistent if you are looking for one straight sound, but she successfully experimenting with different genres on "Centre of Nowhere," "Leaving It All Behind" and "Remember When." Ladybug also proves she has not lost a step when it comes to dropping that trademark jazzy hip-hop with "Dogg Starr," "Ladybug Come Outside" and the soulful "Sexual Alchemy."

Ladybugs are dope too!!!

This album is a good display of variety.Ladybug has always been dope plus the production on this album is excellent. The only problem I have is that the titles differ from the song that plays when you download this.Hopefully the staff realizes this and fixes it.Other than that this album is solid.Much Love

When she sings, as she often does on the album, she's okay. But she also raps a little from time to time, and does it quite poorly, for the most part. Her raps are sort of sing-songy and simple and sometimes not quite on-beat. Fundamentally, rap is a form of percussion. But in her raps on this album, she emphasizes melody over rhythm, to no good effect. But aside from the delivery style, the lyrics themselves are not very interesting and frequently repetitive. Several of the songs seem to have 8-bar verses with 8-bar choruses between them. She just doesn't have enough lyrics to fill an album. The music on this is interesting, but not ground-breaking. At times it makes me think of Blondie, at other times, PM Dawn. It's interesting and somewhat unusual, but not really all that engaging.

Ladybug Mecca has golden pipes and great artistic range. This album is proof that she can sell albums on her own.
