in my top 5 bands

paullie

the reason they are top 5 to me, is because they have a such a variety of sound and writing, but this one is my favorite disc from them, i agree with another reviewer who said try to listen all the way thru, you kind of get into a vibe with this disc if you do that, great stuff

So good!

DKCOMET

This early record is so good, you wonder how they can repeat the success. Well they did, over & over, but this one for early adopters is still the must have & constant go-to record.

Listen throughall at once or you'll miss the point

EMUSIC-00C58E29

Similar in intent and tone to groundbreaking work of MIS and the Nortec Collective.

Fantastic

jtap66

My favorite album from one of my favorite bands. Calexico defy description, with their music drawing from and reveling in so many genres. This album perfectly captures the mood and atmosphere of the American southwest. A perfect album.

nice vibe

ercber

I don't like it as much as Iron and Wine / Calexico, but it is still great.

This one should have the "pick" checkmark

boogerstorm

I was introduced to Calexico through this album and I still think it's their finest moment. Great road trip memories of listening to this while traveling across the American west, it fits well with the Canyonlands and Moab in 4 wheel drive - very "soundtrackey". If you like this check out Calexico buddies and cohorts Giant Sand (chore of enchantment). If you don't have this album, hit the "download all" button now :)

no regrets

Radio_Circus_Radio

If I could give it 4.5 stars, I would. I looked over the Calexico catalog before settling on this one, and I'll definitely be coming back for more. As advertised below: eclectic, unique, and accomplished. This is challenging listening at its easiest.

Eclectic

manitou

Very eclectic. This guys have gone a bit more mainstream recently and that's a bit of a shame. On this record they perfect the Mexican-influenced indie-rock that makes them a favorite in every artists studio-loft.

Great music just keeps on coming!

Tucsondeadhead

John, Joey and friends continue to generate some of the most original and exciting (not to mention eclectic!) music. They are truly Tucson's musical gift to the world (sorry, Linda...). Black Light is yet another hodge-podge of genres that, while in less capable hands would be a jumble of contradictory sounds, comes off flowing with majesty from song to song, genre jumping in the process. If you haven't experienced Calexico, you truly are in for a 5-star treat!

Latin-flavored rockabilly instrumentals

latymer14

If you like Latin sounds, twangy guitars, horn sections and were upset when Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet disappeared....this is your lucky day, muneca.

They Say All Media Guide

Deeper and richer than their debut, Spoke, Calexico’s second album expands upon the sun-baked, cinematic sound of before with the addition of Latin jazz rhythms, mariachi trumpets, and pedal steel; in and of themselves, the group’s songs are not exactly compelling, but they’re produced with such a fine sense of texture and atmosphere that The Black Light still makes for intriguing listening. – Jason Ankeny
