Flashes of genius
Calexico's first album. It's a bit rougher and rambles some, but it still shows (many) flashes of genius. No Calexico collection is complete without it. What are you waiting for?

Put on your best pair of attitude boots (not the hoochie kind) and follow the sunset.
I was in the Zia Records at El Rancho Center some 9 years ago and came across Spoke. I was aware of Giant Sand, and wondered how John and Joey would do music-wise outside the shadow of Howe Gelb. No offense, anyone, but it turns out Calexico has turned out to be better than Giant Sand! Spoke has a spacey quirkiness that I've come to love over the years, and Calexico's every CD and EP has ended up being bought by me since spoke. Calexico is the second-best thing to come out of Tucson! No, no. 1 is not Linda Ronstandt (sorry, Linda), it's the green corn tamales from Lerua's on Broadway. The tamales are sweet and the taste lingers long afterwards -- just like the music on Spoke and Calexico's other releases. Classic stuff.
