Deserves repeated listening

unempirical

I've listened to this CD more times than I can count. The Grosse Fuge sounded like noise the first time I heard it. Amazing, beautiful noise, but noise. Now, after hearing it many times, the fugue sounds like normal (though very good) classical music. If you haven't heard the Grosse Fuge before, give it your full attention the first time you hear it. You can only listen to the Grosse Fuge for the first time once.

I admit that I do not know enough about classical music to justify being at all "fwa-fwa" about it. I can't reasonably compare various string quartets' readings of the Beethoven String Quartets and feel comfortable using large words I don't know. That said, I am a huge fan of Naxos recordings in general, and the first time I heard one of the Kodaly Quartet's Beethoven SQ discs, I thought "wow, they sure sound good to me." I used to own a vinyl copy of the Budapest String Quartet's recording of the late quartets, and the Kodaly Quartet certainly compares favorably. A great way to hear some of the world's greatest music.
