Some of the simplest and most spiritually affecting music you'll ever come across.
Label: Naxos

“‘Philosophy'? He has none,” Nora Part once told a Spike Magazine interviewer. “He learns everything from the old Church Fathers.” Arvo Part's wife just might be right, as his music seems to be some of the simplest — and most spiritually affecting — you'll ever come across. It's no wonder that filmmakers often use his compositions in their work to further their emotional ends ("Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten," included here, has been in no less than eight films). Sure, there may be a niggling voice in your head that screams about the cloying aspects of his stirring and epic compositions. But when isolated from its context as a way to evoke solemnity during the opening moments of Fahrenheit 9/11, I think you'll agree with Steve Reich, who points out that "[Part's] music fulfills a deep human need that has nothing to do with fashion."

20th Century Gesualdo?

Patroclus

Part's music is simultaneously enigmatic and simple. When I listen to it, I sense an affinity with the music of the murderous Prince da Venosa. The seemingly simple sounds are the result of some quite complex structures and the ear knows this. The tintinabulatory sounds, especially when presented by the different instrumental combinations, are stunning. This recording is a fine performance and a great introduction to the music of this contemporary master.

Part seems so simple on the surface, but download the recording and dig in. Listen multiple times and pick out the patterns, then it's genius. Tough stuff to record with so much quiet.... not too bad a job.

The stars do not reflect the quality of the music, simply the performances. An adequate starter kit, though.

I can't say how happy I was to find Naxos added to the labels caried by emusic this week and this collection is one of the best CDs they have released. Parts music is transcendent and this recording does it real justice. A good starting point if you've not come across his work before.

European Mavericks

By Todd Burns, eMusic Contributor

It's nearly impossible to collate the various experiments of 20th century European composers into a coherent narrative. As classical music has soldiered on in the face of world wars, pop music and modern art, the methods, the forms and the sounds that composers work with have become wildly divergent. Folk music, electronic music, birdsong: all of these elements and many, many more have become tools of the trade for avant-garde composers the world over. The… more »
