Henryk Gorecki, GORECKI: Symphony No 3 / Three Olden Style Pieces
Label: Naxos

This Polish composer, friend of the late Pope John Paul II, was minding his own business, writing scores that would be played in Poland and rarely anywhere else, when a mid-'80s French film called Police (starring Gerard Depardieu) used his Symphony #3 as its soundtrack. Essentially a set of three long laments, this lush, slow, heartbreakingly beautiful music had been written, and promptly ignored, years earlier. But when Dawn Upshaw and the Baltimore Symphony recorded it for the American market, "Gorecki's Third" became the surprise hit of the classical music world, hitting the pop album charts and landing in the record collections of millions of people who wouldn't otherwise know a symphony from an S&M club. Where, I was once told, the symphony first garnered fans… apparently they liked the almost unbearable tension of this massive, slowly-moving work, which always seems like it's about to collapse under its own weight.

Gorecki: Symphony No 3

Parzival

The Dawn Upshaw version brought the Gorecki 3rd to huge public notice; but this version, recorded and sung by a Polish orchestra and singer, bring an additional warmth and understanding to what is undoubtedly one of the great masterpieces of late 20th century music.

Intense

I am glad I found this. The first few times I listened to the symphony, I felt emotionally exhausted afterwards, which is pretty amazing. I should find this boring, because it's lento lento lento, and it is repetitive, but it is not boring. It's intense. This particular cd also gets good ratings elsewhere, so I guess that means that in comparison to others, it is a good performance and a good recording.

A Good Version

WishingForECM

There is much more to Gorecki than this famous work, which exists in far too many versions (try the second symphony, also available on Naxos via emusic.com). This version earns its place amongst the others, and (without having heard many others), sounds like a good candidate for best version available. The orchestra plays with a tension and sense of urgency that is overpowering, and Zofia Kilanowicz is excellent on vocals (I like Dawn Upshaw better, but that is no put down). If you want only one version of this work, this one will serve well.
