The grand, sweeping sound of an enchanted forest.
Label: Naxos

A master of color with a knack for enchantment, Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsokov (1844-1908) often found inspiration in folk and fairy tales, as with Sheherazade. Soloist David Nolan drops bait galore on this 1994 recording, imbuing the orchestral suite's unifying violin theme with all the sinuous sensuality it merits. But it's conductor Enrique Bátiz and the Philharmonia Orchestra of London who provide the hook, with a third movement so lush and sweet, you could talk anyone into anything over it.

Sheherazade is a brilliant work, this is an exceedingly uninspired and unimaginative interpetration. But I do love Sheherazade!
