Samuel Barber, BARBER: Cello Concerto / Medea Suite / Adagio for Strings
Label: Naxos

The Adagio for Strings is of course the best-known piece included in this collection, and here it receives a marvelously restrained performance from Marin Alsop and her Royal Scottish National Orchestra forces. Even greater delights, though, are the two less-often explored works included here: the Cello Concerto, which young American cellist Wendy Warner plays with wonderful depth and commitment, and the elegant, lyrical suite from Barber's ballet Medea.

Fantastic!

I've never heard the Barber or any other recordings of this music, so I'm somewhat biased somewhat towards this one. Nevertheless, the music is capably performed, even passionate at times, and every track is worth downloading.

medea suite

if you enjoy the medea suite I would NOT listen to this performance.irritating at best. there is one conducted by s. barber himself, a lightyear better.

Of course everyone is familiar with Adagio for Strings, even if they do not realize the author. I must agree the Medea Ballet and Cello Concerto are well worth exploration and should be in any decent classical collection!
