Colossus, West Oaktown
Label: Om Records

The brainchild of Charlie Tate, founding member of Big Cheese All Stars, Colossus draws from that group's palette of funk and soul to create a tight late-night soundtrack that owes as much to hip-hop and turntablism as it does to traditional jazz. A scattershot rhythm shuffles behind "From the Lab", making for a worked-up, agitated groove. "You A Grown Man Now" is built around a thick, soulful chorus and "Thripeny Bits" peppers electronic trills and blips across a rigid, lockstep backbeat. Colossus is a musical cornucopia, snatching up far-flung influences and blending them to make something odd and engaging.

Solid

This album is good atmospheric hip-hop over smooth jazz beats. Lost points because some of the tracks sounded repetitive. But there is real quality in the execution and production on this album, down-low and blue. Star tracks - 'From the Lab' and 'Tribute'.

Yup!

Flow, pulse, and unwrinkled are words that can define this album. It's a must have.

This is a must download if you are into Hip-Hop/Jazz/Funk The only thing I can compare it to is some The Roots earlier, looser output. Not strictly speaking a hip-hop album I suppose, but certainly a league or two above some of the weaker Hip-Hop/Jazz hybrids from the last decade or two. "You a Grown Man Now" and "Thripney Bits" feature Roots Manuva, which make them essential downloads for me at least in any case.
