Cacophonic (in a good way)

johnpaulcapstick

Can't praise this too highly-for jazz, this is a great take on standard lines, with moments of free-form and bebop mixed nicely into the equation. How Seb Roachford keeps his syncopation at such pace is beyond me! However, it's not all about the drumming; this is a band that swings. Anyone who likes music should be able to glean some pleasure from this and also from 'Skinny Grin', whether you like punk, prog, soul, funk or jazz. It's all well-mixed here.

Stumbled upon, but kept for good.

DubDance

Like others here, I stumbled on this album, that's one of the beauties of emusic, and other internet music sites, in that you can start by listening to one thing and 30 mins later you've downloaded something completely different just by following links, recommendations, neighbours picks and so on. If he was still aound, I can imagine hearing this for the first time on the late John Peel's radio show(sorry UK-centric, but a great DJ). I can't remember where my stumbling started from, but I've listened to this loads of times since, it's jazz yeah, but it ain't trad jazz, it's today's jazz, hopefully tomorrow's too. Can be quite raw if you're expecting straightforward stuff, have played it to friends who are really into jazz, period, they loved it too. Hopefully the last chance disco gets taken up and we get more of this soon to bop to.

Surprising

Sigurdul

Wow....I was just browsing through the various types of music that emusic has here on the site when I stumbled across this...this.. whatever this is. It stopped me right in my tracks. Itīs so original. For its originality alone I give it three stars and one more because the songs are actually pretty good.

Jazz for punks and rockers

moshbug

Of all the fine albums out this year, this was the most surprising. I'd heard of these guys through friends who said "At the Drive-in meets Morphine, maaaan!". This I had to hear. Got the record and was blown away by the way it rocked, I mean it's still Jazz but not in an old beatnik kinda way or even a slimy Jamie Cullum kinda way (God forbid!). The last time I heard something this Jazz-mental was Miles Davis' 'On The Corner' and I reckon it surpasses that one. Well, you can listen to it for a start! So all you Jazz-fearing punk/rock/emo/metal fans, get stuck in coz this is excellent
