Irresistible soul and funk versions of old chestnuts.
Label: Ubiquity Records

The best part of the night is rarely the main event; it's the hours leading up to it, when the distant prospects of midnight still seem pregnant with possibility. The fourth volume of Ubiquity Records 'present-meets-past Rewind! series serves up some simply irresistible moments: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings reclaim their stake with a smoldering funk version of "This Land Is Our Land," while Rebirth gives the Mighty Ryeders 'disco gem "Evil Vibrations" a cosmic makeover. Elsewhere, Sa-Ra takes on Sly & the Family Stone's seesawing "Just Like a Baby," Nostalgia 77 gives the White Stripes some soul and Shawn Lee slows things back down (because you should really pace yourself) with a smoky version of Nick Drake's "River Man." The perfect soundtrack for the pre-party, the backyard cookout or the ride to wherever it is you want to go; making things happen once you get there is up to you.

Missing tunes

EMUSIC-01E49A5A

Hey e-music, I buy albums not songs. Why would I get this album from you when it's missing tunes?

Cross-genre covers that aren't gimmicks

Ubiquity is really starting to make me understand how people used to feel loyalty to a label. They consistently surprise me, and this album is no exception. Willis's track in particular is downright stunning (emusic - if you had her album I'd be downloading it right now) The only real shame is that emusic couldn't get the Nostalgia 77 cover of 7 nation army, which is definitely worth hearing.

Shawn Lee's cover of Nick Drake's "River Man" is siiiick, deep and dirty.

Ubiquity does it again!

Easy-Urf

Some very, very good tunes on here! Many highlights, but Willis' rendition of Cameo's Werd Up is my favourite.

"One or more tracks from this album are unavailable for download at this time." This happens too often these days.

what the fuck, i ain't gonna try to be cool about it, but sometimes it feels good to have that e-music to muse yourself. with abit of myspace, though. fuck man the internet rules! now, right this very moment i'm digging belle & sebastian and finley quaye, with a lot of hip-hop and reggae. check the time y'all. the night before xmas- buck 65? ma, what are they givin'me. thus give thanks to the artists and to the joints thats keeping them-

god i love this!

Wow. Totally under-rated by others, I just had to say something. This is pure stuff, re-workings of songs you forgot you knew. Try it.
