3rd of 3 great 90s records

I was fortunate to see quite a few dischord bands in the early 90s as for some odd reason, Green Bay, WI was included on a lot of tours. Lungfish was always the show stealer when they came through, via mere presence and power of their sound in the live setting. The band played this album live from beginning to end when touring back in 95-96. I first heard it this way and thought it remarkable that I wasn't left feeling disappointed at all, contrary to the experience I've had with so many "new material sets" by other bands. This is really where Lungfish peaked in my opinion, as their veer into "experimental" territory in later records seemed a bit jumbled for my tastes. Try the 3-album arc of Rainbows from Atoms, Pass and Stow, and finally Sound in Time -- a tremendous set of post-hardcore AOR. A true album band. Best enjoyed extremely lound.

Why mess with a good thing? Sound in Time is another spare but striking release from Lungfish. While it falls in the same vein as the rest of the band’s ever-growing catalog, the minimalist sound and probing lyrics are how Lungfish helped pioneer the post-hardcore movement. Riff after riff, beat after beat, the rock-solid foundation is laid for Daniel Higgs’ mysterious, emotive lyrics. Somehow, Sound in Time is profound and accessible all at once, something very few albums ever accomplish, but something Lungfish accomplishes time and time again. – Ron DePasquale
