A gorgeous dose of electro hip-hop beauty.
2005 | Label: Jam-On Recordings / IODA

If you remember one Newcleus song, it's most likely going to be their epic 1983 radio smash, “Jam On It,” a cut that gave the world a gorgeous dose of electro hip-hop beauty. The track remains a breakdance classic to this day, mixing a basic, keyboard-plunked bassline, a frenetic drum program and loosey-goosey storyline by rapper Cozmo D (aka group leader Ben Cenac).

But Newcleus wasn't defined by “Jam On It.” Much like their peers the Jonzun Crew, they were, at their core, a live funk band with electro leanings. If you step outside of “Jam On It,” you might just find yourself grooving to “Automan”: a great slice of electro-soul with driving drums and walls of keyboards. Or “Computer Age (Push the Button)” and “Cyborg Dance,” which are both funky sci-fi fantasies fueled by electonics and imagination. “Destination: Earth (1999),” on the other hand, goes a bit far afield, trapped in the middle of real funk and the computer-driven electro that they helped pioneer.

Few great tracks

TigerSharkMusic

Has a few terrific, classic tracks on it, but a few that are uninspired and not worth your DL credits. See other reviews for the worthwhile ones.

An influence on Snap!

stepwriterun

If you listen to Snap!'s "Rhythm is a Dancer" and then Newcleus' "Automan", you'll notice that they have virtually the same sequencer riff, just that Snap! slowed their version down and started on a different note.

Ahead of their time

signothefish

This was not your stereotypical sound for the '80s. It has a lot more synthesizers than you would have normally experienced in rap music at that time. Newcleus was a unique group, with a sound better classified as electronic hip-hop. I actually like the sound a lot better now than back then. These days, I listen to a lot of eurodance music, and this CD has stood the test of time. I can jam to this just about anywhere (well not with my windows down ;), and it doesn't sound too much cheesier than some of the sounds you hear today. By all means, listen to Jam On It first, but don't leave out some of the other good songs either... Teknology, Computer Age, Automan, Space is the Place, and Cyborg Dance. Yes, the Wikki Wikki song was just a little too Magoo for me.

Great blast from the past!

If you're longing to put your parachuting pants and windbreaker on and do a headspin and a body wave, then get this album. The original "Jam On" songs are on here, along with a newer-sounding remix. Other Newcleus classics are on here, too. A third of the songs on here sound a little too 80's, so get this album only if you want to listen to nostalgia, not to something that'll get your feet moving. Just keep in mind that Newcleus's music doesn't really sound like hip hop, but more like dance or electronica. You can pop to it, but it's really hard to top rock to.

Classic Electro!

Porieux

This is classic electro from 1983-1985. Some tracks are stronger than others but there is a lot of good stuff...though it would be good to have the instrumentals on some of these...! Check out Jam On It and Computer Age first.
