BUY THIS NOW!

bearlikemouse

One of the all-time greatest sludge bands. This album is the turning point that saw them get more progressive and broaden the horizons of metal. But don't buy it here. They charge you 12 songs for a 9 song album, but only let you get 'Weight' (one of the best tracks on the album) if you download the whole thing. C'mon eMusic!

Better vocal balance than Waivering Radiant

EatChocolate

The instrumentals of this group are excellent. I'm not a big fan of the style of low-gravel-scream vocals in Isis but this album has them pulled back. Instead of dominating the total sound of their music and in some cases drowning out the music as in Waivering Radiant, the vocals seem to be another instrument.

I took a chance based on the reviews here & I'm glad I did! This is REALLY great jam!Holy crap, these guys can ROCK!I don't know what I could add to my review that hasn't been said already. This is a good place to start with this band, then go to Panopticon and In Absence of Truth next.I'd like to recommend Ufomammut's Snailking to you Isis fans.

Brilliant adreneline

Whether you call it metal or post-metal or slap some other silly label on it, this music shreds. You can't go wrong downloading anything by Isis, but this is by far my favorite by them. I love working out to this album, but I swear I must look like a speed-freak when I'm banging my head on the eliptical and my heartrate is up to 170.

Very Satisfying Heaviness

lordkissyface

It's been said that Isis is "thinking man's metal" but it just makes me FEEL!!! Your instructions: 1. Get all tracks 2. Turn off all the lights 3. Put on headphones and get comfy 4. Push play 5. Burn, float, fly...

Metal or not, they are simply great

Ruhl

Isis is one of those bands you can really get into, enjoying every album they grace us with. You can tell through their music they are a band that knows how to work well together. As stated in previous reviews, the minimal vocals are a plus since the instrumentation carries so much on its own and you feel vocals at certain points would only detract. Download this album, then download their other albums. Isis is hard to compare to other bands and styles; little bit of Mastodon here, little bit of ocean metal here, but mainly its Isis and it kicks *expletive*.

The fine line between melody and noise

rowleyj

Just as a good as Panopticon, in my opinion. Though most people seem to heavily favor Panopticon. I can't decide.

Engaging

When I listened to the preview tracks before downloading this, I was a little skeptical. But having two friends who constantly recommend this band I had to try it out. I was not let down at all by this album. The vocals are minimalistic often coming in at the end of a song. The songs really revolve around the beautiful arrangements and contrasts between heavy and peaceful. This band plays completely as a group never straying far from the overall theme of each song. Having heard this album, I am an Isis fan already. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to hear a very unique approach to heavy metal music.

Great work of art!

CupeVampe

I think I started to see ISIS name in 1999... at the time I really couldnt get into them... I don't know why (I dont remember). Now I've decided to give them a try (since they are on ipecac, I thought Mike patton coulndt be wrong) and... what a record! Cant even say its metal, its just great music! Heavy yet complex and delicate... unique!

They Say All Music Guide

Oceanic is the next logical step for Isis after the ugly, grandiose Celestial, the Aaron Turner-led outfit’s second full-length looking simultaneously inward and outward, reaching into the nether regions of outer space while still keeping its feet firmly earthbound. Yes, it’s an ambitious record, one that isn’t immediately consumed and digested — rather, it consumes and digests the listener with grand and hypnotic waves of sound. Songs blur together as aggressive, post-hardcore guitar riffery trades with lengthy, meditative bouts of electronic exploration, a technique that would result in plodding, pretentious mush in less capable hands. Instead, Oceanic successfully mirrors the dense, unimaginable power of its namesake, combining the minimalist metallic art of Godflesh with the bipolar mood swings and Black Sabbath muscle of West Coast brethren Neurosis. Turner’s deathcore growl-shouts serve to puncture the instrumental tension that balloons slowly and painstakingly inflates throughout the album’s 63 minutes, with ex-Dirt Merchants singer Maria Christopher occasionally drifting hazily into the arrangements. “Weight,” at nearly 11 minutes, doesn’t necessarily move as much as it evolves toward its goal, starting with lazy, but purposeful, melodic whale songs before logically concluding with Christopher’s repetitive dub vocal and a droning organ suggesting spiritual rebirth. Only Isis could get away with writing hardcore hymns about the inevitability of elemental forces and pull it off with such conviction and attention to detail. The album may initially seem to exist in hazy head space, but clarity comes with further submergence, assuming you’re willing to lay back and float, letting the water take you into both conscious and subconscious realms. Oceanic is a masterfully complex symphony of majestic noise and melody, an all-consuming trip into the earth and mind that defies genre and, often, description — simply put, a triumph. – John Serba
