11 1/2 Years Later...

40below

I'm a little (?) late to this band, buttt if you enjoy the comedic and melodic stylings of say Cake, Sloan, Barenaked Ladies, They Might Be Giants, Pavement, et al, you would enjoy this very much. "Get In The Car" really freaked me out for a second since it sounds EXACTLY like someone else, I couldn't figure out who, now I'm thinking definitely Sloan. "The Incredible Medicine Show" is very much Beatles-filtered-through-XTC, and "Kick In The Ass" has some witty humor via barbershop quartet, likewise the title track. I wonder where these guys are now? Why do these bands put so much into songcraft and so little into promotions into the U.S.? Or are we just too duumb to appreciate this smartie Canuck stuff? My wife went to Ohio U. and knew of these guys, probably from her Canadian hockey player friends. Take off, eh.

Fruvous

RandaPrince

OK, no, it's not country and shouldn't be classified as such. The most accurate label for Moxy Fruvous is folk, I guess, though I don't really think that one is all that accurate either. What Fruvous was, in my opinion, is a great group that had some really great songs, written with wit and intelligence. I wish I had become a fan soon enough to have seen them live (they're not together anymore, as far as I know). So no, it's not fair to call them country, and I can understand why someone expecting a country album would be disappointed. But if you buy a Fruvous album expecting the right thing -- often-funny, always-smart modern folk -- you will probably love it.

The Old Prude's got it wrong.

Strand

Moxy Fruvous is one of my favorite bands, and YWGTTM is one of their better albums. Awesome Canadian Folk with a humorous bent, this album is a bit unfocused, but excellent musically. Get *Thornhill* or *Wood* elsewhere, they show Fruvous' country bent and are their best albums.

Great, eclectic album

LostLeviathan

This is the best album from a clever Canadian group that can't be defined by a single genre. It's got quirky, catchy tracks like "Michigan Militia," an upbeat cover of The Bee Gees' "I've Gotta Get a Message To You," liberal political tracks like "Your New Boyfriend," and a Beatles-inspired fun rock track, "The Incredible Medicine Show." There's plenty of humor in between, as well as the sincere melancholy of "Love Set Fire." Get this one first, then try Moxy's other albums.

Reclassify!

theoldprudesmusicreview

This ain't Country! Nor Western! This is some of that arrested development pop in the mode of Bare Naked Ladies. Scarcely a thought outside the dorm room. Send this album to where the cr*p is kept for the suburban kids. Let them give a listen.

They Say All Media Guide

Moxy Früvous excels at four-way harmonies while diversely delivering humorous or poignant original songs. The cheeky bookends of You Will Go to the Moon, their latest collection, are “Michigan Militia” with MC 900 Ft. Jesus-goes-Früvous stylings, and the a cappella title track. “Get in the Car” condenses an entire afternoon of taking in the autumn changes along country roads into two-and-a-half minutes. Wurlitzer and theremin dress up their version of “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You.” This’ll remind you of the pre-soul/disco sound of the Bee Gees but without interrupting the flow of mostly acoustic, many-voiced gems. Duke Ellington identified two kinds of music, good and bad. Serious fans of music in any way will place this Moxy Früvous album in the “good” category. – Tom Schulte
