A relentless low-tech marriage of heavy Miami Bass and Portuguese language rapping.
2005 | Label: Mr. Bongo / The Orchard

Thanks largely to the ambassadorial work of the influential American DJ Diplo and the Sri Lankan-British vocalist M.I.A., the funk carioca of Rio de Janeiro has become a global rage — a relentless low-tech marriage of heavy Miami Bass, Portuguese language rapping and rampant sampling of a dubious legality. In Rio, funk carioca parties turn out thousands who dance like crazy to the latest tracks, which are almost always passed around as MP3s rather than pressed onto wax (or CD). This collection was compiled by Tetine — an influential Paulista who helped introduce the genre to London, where he now lives. Most funk carioca artists are anonymous, but this collection includes some burning tracks by a few acts that have actually made a name for themselves, including Deise Tigrona and Tati Quebra Barraco.

I can’t get over how good this is. Whoever does the “digging” over at Mr Bongo's sure has a fantastic job and great ears! It's good to pick up on music from other cultures and hear how it has influenced modern artists such as Diplo and MIA. Cracking album!

wha?!

Injeção wasn't 'ripped off' by M.I.A... she borrowed the music with permission, used her own lyrics and is giving Deise Tigrona royalties.

so good its stolen

chica2006

track number 6 was ripped off by M.I.A. in her new song boyz, the rest is totally real powerful stuff, there is a track that sounds like 'who let the dogs out' in portugese, great album

The New Sound of Brazil

By Peter Margasak, eMusic Contributor

As George W. Bush so sharply observed a few years ago to the country's president Lula, "Wow, Brazil is big." Yet based on the music that's most often exported from the massive South American country -- bossa nova and samba -- you might think otherwise. As rich and wonderful as those meta-genres are, the truth is Brazil is home to a dazzling variety of styles and traditions on par with, or even surpassing, the musical… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Take a dash of most ’80s dance style you can name from electro to hip-hop, from new romantic to the cheap Casio beats of early dancehall, mix and match them wildly, and you pretty much have funk carioca. Having grown up in the favelas, or slums of Rio de Janeiro (hence the name carioca), it has started to find a more global audience. This, the first compilation of the style, shows it in all its ragged glory and silliness. Yes, it does sound odd to many ears, simply because everything is so familiar — but also so strange, like Alice down the rabbit hole. Above all, it’s fun. Unless you understand Portuguese, you won’t have a clue what they’re shouting — and it is a shout, not rapping or singing — but it doesn’t matter. The exuberance communicates, whether in cheap synthesized horn riffs or rattling percussion. MC Batata, one of the elders of the new funk, rips it up on “Feira de Acari,” but he’s only one of many represented here. This is the first wave, and it remains to be seen whether it will really take off outside Brazil. But if you want a crash course in the ’80s as if it had been through a blender — as well as something that’s just fun to dance to — this is it. – Chris Nickson
