Tomasson concerto - a major find

gladys.kumba

A particular highpoint of this disk is the second flute concerto of the Icelandic composer Haukur Tomasson. This is exceptionally intelligent and aurally engaging music, and perhaps easier to grasp in formal terms than the rather sprawling (though attractive, and beautifully played) Aho concerto that precedes it. Tomasson has some of the constructivist logic and precision that is so satisfying to the mind in Bartok's music, without sounding in any way like the Hungarian master. I immediately went in search of other music by this highly imaginative contemporary composer. A word of warning to those interested in the Bis disc containing his first flute concerto. Due to the restriction on downloading longer items separately you will have to acquire the second concerto all over again, in exactly the same performance, if you want to make the acquaintance of the fine first concerto, and the amazingly elephantine duo concerto for double basses.

Aho flute concerto is beautiful indeed

I just downloaded the Aho Flute Concerto and find it beautiful and pleasing beyond words. Thanks to the musical artists involved for their excellence and in turn for inspiring us!

a great modern disc

Nereffid

The Aho is a great work: mysterious, beautiful, sometimes overwhelmingly powerful, and with a truly haunting finale. Definitely a modern classic. I was going to say “download it if you like such-and-such” but really anyone should give it a try. Tómasson’s concerto suffers somewhat in comparison, but it has a likable jitteriness to it. Christian Lindberg’s concerto is as full of color and life as you might expect if you’ve heard any of his trombone discs. It makes a fitting conclusion to the album, and in fact the nature of the 3 works means they can function collectively as a single mega-concerto that can be listened to right through.
