Yet another "Must Have"

powerpool

Hawkwind have been one of my favourites when I was a bit younger, and this in particular "Silver Machine" brings back fond memories. The experienced listener will find that many of todays music is in fact based on groups like this, same as the early Deep Purple, Uriah Heep or Pink Floyd - just to mention a few. Of course, in those days there wasn't todays overflow of groups, groupies and the like. A suttle hint for those who have difficulties with the sound quality on this side: use a converter from "mp3 to .wav", such as e.g. ware from Xilisoft or NERO. The beauty of NERO is that you can apply all sorts of filters to improve on the sound. This is a good one to have, and if only for sentimental reasons. Get cracking!!!

Excellent musically;slightly letdown by the sound.

Like the other reviewer, I did initially find the sound quality on this quite poor - overly bassy and not well mixed - and it is variable throughout. this was disappointing as I owned the original record when it came out and the quality on that was good. However, it is no worse than attending many concerts in person and the overriding sensation on listening to the whole 2 CDs is that this is the best live performance of Hawkwind that I've ever heard - the band are simply sensational and that is more than enough to compensate for any reservations with the sound. If you're a Hawkwind fan and you've not heard this then do yourself a favour and download it now!

Nearly..

Saw Hawkwind in Birmingham on this tour, so I was looking forward to a re-acquaintance after all this time. Unfortunately the sound quality is not good-lots of rasping that I don't get usually. Still a good relic if you were there.

They Say All Music Guide

Opening Dave Brock’s own “collectors series” of Hawkwind anthologies, Complete ’79 is an attempt to round up, and place into some form of chronological logic, the wealth of odds and ends recorded during the band’s 1979 tours — and hitherto spattered across more budget collections than bear thinking about. All seven tracks previously available on the Live ’79 collection are here, plus seven more dispersed across such budget-priced collections as Acid Daze, Anthology, British Tribal Music, The Castle Masters Collection, The Collection, and The Best & the Rest Of. In terms of sound quality, Complete ’79 offers no improvement on the already available recordings — it remains clear but distant, unmixed, and certainly un-remastered. It is the simple gathering of the material that matters, and the opportunity to hear the tracks resequenced to resemble a full Hawkwind concert. Opening disc two, keyboard player Tim Blake’s solo epics “New Jerusalem” and “Lighthouse” are especially welcome, while the version of “Master of the Universe” rates among the most dramatic in the entire catalog. Great guitar solo, too. Finally, the packaging is bolstered by a beautiful booklet reproducing the tour program produced for the concerts themselves. – Dave Thompson
