Anthem for certain 80s frustration

Edwin

For those of us who didn't buy a polished-up Talking Heads or the Clash's commercialized train wreck there was a fabulous, hardly-mentioned band that, sadly, stayed with us way too briefly. Everything I have heard so far from the Minutemen is stunning, truthful, hilarious and, well, about a minute long. Most importantly, their sound is their own and has never been replicated.

Not a follow-up to Double Nickels as much as it was an interesting assortment of odds and ends recorded during the band’s infancy and pre-Minutemen days when they were called the Reactionaries. Unsurprisingly, the quality of some of these recordings is less than high quality, but the energy and excitement come through. Side two is arguably the most interesting, with Martin Tamburovich on lead vocals; this is perhaps the most exhaustive collection of Reactionaries material on record. Perhaps not an essential record, but a good one nonetheless. – John Dougan
