The cult soul hero scant, but stunning, recording history compiled.
Label: Ubiquity / Luv N' Haight

In the early '70s, a San Francisco man-about-town who went by the name Darondo recorded three flawless seven-inch singles of folky soul, and promptly disappeared back into the fast life. Some thirty years later, having become a cult hero to Gilles Peterson and discerning soul collectors worldwide, Darondo seems a missing link between Al Green's sacred stirrings and Sly Stone's all-out freak-outs. This compilation is an absolute revelation, collecting his brilliant singles — the weepy, face-melting ballad “Didn't I,” the sexy “Legs” and the rousing, protest-themed title track — as well as unreleased demos. Free at last!

Wow!

gussygoose

Thank you eMusic for bringing us such gems as Darondo. Never heard of him 'til today! I love the ragged edges of "Legs" (very funky in an African way), and the soulfulness of the whole CD.

Amazing

Download "Didn't I" immediately. This is one of my favorite songs of all time. "Legs" and "True" are also good.

Ouch

There is a reason Darondo disappeared. This is it. He sounds like Al Green until he goes for the high notes. He then sounds like a cat being strangled.

Wonderful

He is truly great. I am so disappointed that he didn't make it. He had the talent.

Good to see this on eMusic. I bought the cd after hearing the awesomely deep title track some time back. Took me a while to find it but it was worth the wait. Wouldn't surprise me if 'Legs' was a big influence on early Prince.

Harsh to call this a poor man's version of, it's more like a sleazier, grittier (if thats possible) Al Green. Worth a listen

Just when I thought I heard every baby-making song from the 70s, Darondo surfaces from the long-lost crates of Bay Area soul. So everyone reading this review, sing "Legs" to a lady in your life and watch her swoon in .01 seconds. "True" is also a keeper. Download the entire record, it's a the perfect summer/fall/winter/spring album.
