My Turn to Moan

HarrySmith

I try to avoid joining those who complain about a) not being able to download an album in their geographic territory and/or b) the exorbitant greed of excessive credit charges even though we've supposedly moved to a new cost model here at e-music. But fuck it, the fact it'll cost me 42 credits - almost an entire monthly subscription - to get to hear this record, essentially the same cost as buying a CD or LP, seriously irks me.

great songs. great beats. awesome. anyone saying otherwise is ridiculous. i particularly like "heavy" and "the heist" but it flows from beginning to end.

Incredible slept on gem

whatever you do ignore the advice of chasech4 and DL this now. One of the greatest and most slept on hip-hop albums of all time... yep, I said it. unbelievable beats by madlib and dilla, and yes, it's some gangsta sh*t. not sure how you can say what dilla tried to distance himself from when it's him rapping on 1/2 these tracks... or didn't you know that? "you must be out of your head if your system ain't up to the red."

Mockery

chasech4

Alright J Dilla is a musical genius, but this album is joke. Every song is like all the commercialized crap you see on MTV and hear on the radio now. Dilla always tried to distance himself from music about drugs, degrading women, violence, and bling bling. Which leads me to believe this album is a mockery of what commercialized hip-hop has become.

Don't DL this tight album from emusic

rob_gower25

Tight tight album. Two of hip hops best collaborate together to form one amazing, intelligent and very abstract sound. J-Dilla's vocals kill it and Madlib's beats are head nodding psychedelic explosions. Don't download this album from emusic though, as one of the songs "Stars" skips pretty erratically.

Awwww yeeeah!

Instrumentals and alt versions! Awesome new downloads...this album is not for the faint of hop but is an absolute classic. Overshadowed by Madvillain in its time, this is just as good or better. Seriously TURN IT UP as loud as you can. Some of Mad and Jaydee's bangin'ist tracks here. BASS.

yeah I'm just gonna agree with everyone else here, but this album has incredible hip-hop on it. of course j-dilla is one of the all-time greats as a producer, but his MC'ing on this album (and on other tracks like the great "Fuck tha Police") is equally great. you will play it again and again.

MADILLA

THEMSTREET.COM

one of the best albums i own. i can play it for days. this album is brought to you by the two most creative people in hip-hop music - j dilla(rip) and madlib.

Only the haters can't feel this one...

They Say All Music Guide

It started with J Dilla (aka Jay Dee) hearing a mix that Madlib put together in the Bomb Shelter of Dilla’s beats with Madlib rapping over them. He was impressed enough to call up Stones Throw mastermind Peanut Butter Wolf directly to get the ball moving on a Madlib/J Dilla collaboration. Jaylib became a quick reality, so the producers started sending each other beats to rap over. As each were situated in their home towns (Dilla in Detroit and Madlib in L.A.), they fleshed out Champion Sound, which will easily win the award for the Most Blunted Album of the Year; these guys were smoking serious greens while working this one out. As one might expect, the production qualities of an album made by two of hip-hop’s most celebrated producers is rich in texture, innovation, and solid momentum. Where Madlib is a seasoned MC (look at Lootpack’s Soundpieces or Quasimoto’s The Unseen), Dilla is not. He’s not bad, just rougher around the edges, which lends to a disorienting listen in general. The beats are slapped together, whacked samples are abruptly dropped, and the lyrics are steps behind the beat and generally about nothing but b-boy posturing and other nonsense. All of which results in a very unique and strangely rewarding album. While it may require repeated listens to take hold, Champion Sound is full of a lot more winners than losers. – Sam Samuelson
