Rare Beats

Shinzakura

I had the chance to hear a band from Hong Kong like this back in the mid-90s, so when I heard this album I was floored to see it wasn't Celestial. Instead it was a whole newcomer from this side of the puddle, with a sharp ear on fusing East and West into one great Silk Road of Sound. Get this album.

Unique fusion of East and West

mylesqm

The fusion of chinese instrumentation with Western rhythm stylings makes for a unique sound that may turn some off, but will doubtless attract fans of well-done genre crossovers. Some of the tracks are a little too pop-y for my tastes, but the hip-hop and jazz-influenced compositions are quite good. "Babylon of the Orient" and "Jessfield Park" are standouts.

Babylon of the Orient

Stoneysilence

I got Babylon of the Orient for free on my Sansa E280 but because of a poor music service I had to reformat my player and lost it. I love this song. So now I am gonna buy it permanently.

Asian-inspired down-tempo

napisarn

I think I initially heard this stuff being played at the Peninsula Hotel Bangkok, and loved it. Didn't know what it was until I heard Miss Shanghai played on Dave's Lounge podcast. Checked it out, and this is exactly what I was looking for!

Some very good tracks, listen to each one

joetainment

There is good stuff here. This album has some excellent tracks, but a lot of them are much too cheesy for me. (think "radio pop") Others are very intelligently composed. Don't download it all though, just a few good ones. Listen to them on the band's site first.
