Various Artists – Stones Throw Records, The Funky 16 Corners
Label: Stones Throw

Over the later '90s and especially the '00s, rare-funk comps have abounded, on eMusic and elsewhere. As with most ubiquitous things, the quality varies greatly. This 2001 collection, though, will have you moving from beginning to end; even better, its compilers, Stones Throw founder Egon and DJ-producer Peanut Butter Wolf, fully licensed every cut. (This is rarer than you might guess.) Most of these tracks are delightful rhythm bonbons, from the squirming Moog and fleet guitar riffs of Bad Medicine's "Trespasser" to Billy Ball and the Upsetters' "Tighten Up Tighter," which basically throws a couple new licks and cities onto Archie Bell & the Drells' "Tighten Up." When it moves this well, only Bell's lawyers can complain.

Mostly Good Stuff, But...

Palomino-Royalle

Most of this material ranges from good to really good, but beware the last track (The Funky Buzzard) unless you are totally tone-deaf. The sax is so out-of-tune that I find it literally painful.Ye gods! Ignore the last one (or enjoy it if you can) and you'll have a worthwhile album for a bargain price.

A MUST HAVE!

bltwooddseven

This is the stuff that dreams are made of. If you haven't d/l'd this or "Cold Heat" yet, get out from under that rock! I just found out that Stone's Throw has re-released this comp using ORIGINAL master tapes instead of old 45s. Check out their website for up to the minute info.

Before there was Afrika Bambaataa and Kool Herc, there was this stuff. Man, this shit is hot! Not a single weak song on this disc. Great variety too! THESE are the roots of hip hop!

Remembering James Brown

By eMusic Editorial Staff, eMusic Contributor

The passing of James Brown on Christmas Day cast a dark cloud not only over the holidays, but over music itself. The many eulogies that appeared in the press only scratched the surface of Brown's greatness and influence — any university that should elect to create a James Brown Studies department gets our wholehearted endorsement and admissions application. While our own James Brown catalogue is limited — the major labels monopolize his essential releases — eMusic… more »

A Dozen of Funk

By Michelangelo Matos, eMusic Contributor

Funk used to be a bad word. Today, though, it denotes a rhythmic continuum that has, more or less, come to dominate pop music, thanks to the genre's infiltration into everything from hip-hop to electronica. Funk is also a belief system for children of the '70s, the era when George Clinton synthesized the rhythmic developments of James Brown and Sly Stone first with Cream-and-Hendrix-style heavy guitars, then with futuristic synthesizers. He also inspired a fervent… more »

They Say All Music Guide

This outstanding collection of funk singles compiled by Stones Throw Records includes 16 songs recorded between 1968 and 1974 by obscure underground groups from America. One of the strongest crossover funk labels of the last decade, Stones Throw pays due respect to modern music’s forgotten grandfathers on this most grooving recorded history lesson of impeccable quality. Anchored by the Highlighters’ classic “The Funky 16 Corners,” whereby the Indianapolis group upped the ante in 1969′s craze for bands counting “corners” (read: hit me three times!) by breaking the recorded benchmark with 16, this compilation leans heavily on the James Brown sect and celebrates the lesser-known groups of the genre, who with high talent and low budget put to tape some of the most raw funk ever captured to date. Representative modernist Cut Chemist of Jurassic 5 even gets an interpretation slot with “Bunky’s Pick” on one of two bonus tracks. Every track is essential to the record and every groove a lost gem. An informative 16-page booklet with full-color photos is included. – Nic Kincaid
