punk with heart

doriangreytoday

Got this thing when it first came out and was immediately impressed by its grifters-with- a -chick melding. But what brought me to the point- of- purchase was "song that ended your career" - singular and sweet. You need it too...

Download!

Different version of "Postcard Blues." Both are great. One minor key and one major. Wish their Capitol Lp's were here....

Doesn't hold up

boomshanker

Yes, there are some pretty cool grooves here, and yes, it sort of, kind of, if you really want it to, sounds a bit like the Stones, maybe... but it doesn't hold up for me today. Don't get me wrong, download it if you're looking for yet another band that "captured" the "sound" of the mid 90s, but if you`re interested in bands that were writing their own history as opposed to those who were putting forth cookie cutter copies, I`d suggest you move right along... I already did.

Rock N Roll BABY!!!

mrsweetnstuff

screw the nirvana comparisons, screw the rolling stones comparisons; what rock band isn't influenced by those two on some level? this record rocks. this band rocks. this is the sexiest rock n roll record i've ever heard. Bondy and Anne Marie Griffins' vocals are a sensual mesh with the trash-can-crunch distorted guitars and brain melting, porn star libido rythmn section of daniel johnston and les nuby. this record is a classic if i ever heard one. never mind that you may never have heard of verbena, i assure you that your ears will bleed with the glorious rapture that is rock n fuckin roll at it's finest. one of my favorite albums of all time, hands down!

wow!

Gaz

This is the album that garnered praise from critics and musicians alike when it was released in 97, and caught the ear of Dave Grohl who then produced their 2nd release. I have been looking for this for years! It still sounds raw and urgent nearly 10 years later, Scott Bondy is superb live, and if you like early 70's Stones(Heartbreaker) you'll love this! Thanks Emusic!!

Fans of Sticky Fingers-era Stones, will get a rush off Scott Bondy’s album-long homage to Richards, which culminates in the track “Me & Keith”giving you a sense of this band’s self-conscious sense of humor. On “Hey, Come On,” he offers that “this song goes out to no one but me/but I’ll try just to sing a little harder.” Like a less scruffy and more focused Royal Trux, these bluesy tunes appropriate Richard’s cutting reverbed guitar sound, and the result is hotter than anything the Stones have done in twenty years. They even ante up their own heroin paean, “Junk for Fashion,” which blurs the line between statement and ironic admission. The bonus on this already fascinating guitar album is Anne Marie Griffin, whose bluesy southern twang provides essential contrast to indie-guitar-band voice of Bondy-who sounds like in addition to Richards, he’s accidentally channeled Thurston Moore’s vocals. Producer Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev) gives the album a rich open sound that still showcases the band’s hefty punch. While tracks like “Hey, Come On” (which sounds like the Byrds if they did new wave), and the slower, somber, Band-ish “The Song That Ended Your Career” offer momentary diversions, the meat of the album is in tracks like the throbbing “Hot Blood,” the “Bitch”-flavored lust of “Shaped Like A Gun,” and the album-ender, “Kiss Yourself,” with it’s rock’n'roll epithet, “let’s just pretend that we’re real.” – Chris Parker
