Kudu, Death of the Party
2006 | Label: Nublu Records

Death of the Party, the New York-based Kudu's second album (and first that they proudly claim), is potential-packed like a sports car in neutral. It's very much a document of a band still in its infancy, staggering to and fro in search of steady footing, one paw jutting towards the squelches of electro, the other towards party R&B with a few grasps at the rattles of straight-up dance music, too. Even at the conclusion of the album's largely great 14 tracks, it's unclear exactly where Kudu will end up, only that the final destination will be one worth visiting.

"Magic Touch," the album's best song by a long yard, hopefully hints at the shape of Kudu to come. Frontwoman Sylvia Gordon vamps and coos over a marching keyboard burp, her smooth and expressive vocals stomping on each beat in the verses and drawing out the drama in the chorus, her voice drooping with each note of a descending chime-line. It's a completely self-contained song: no fat, no arrangement emaciation, just five perfectly conceived minutes of neo-disco.

It's Gordon's voice — with its minesweeping range and effortless charisma — that so clearly marks Kudu for future success, but it's arranger D. Anthony Parks… read more »

Thumbs Up

LotusHead

It's on par with Moloko, only a little more funky with some nice electro bits 'a' bobs. A good listen if you enjoy trip-hop like vocals...

Stumble. Fall. Dance. Repeat.

Vespathekid

This one came from the Nublu Winter 07 sampler that just came out for free as of this writing. I really liked the Magic Touch track and came here. DL Playing House, Suite Life, & Bar Star. This is Electro Clash at its finest. Something from the very early 80s with today's senibility thrown in like a Herbert sound. I have not seen so many mixed reviews in a long time here. This is good.

Delicious and just what we need!!

Aqua

if you have a party full of people who only know lindsay lohan, britney spears, paris hilton, 50 cent, etc...then ya this will most likely clear the floor... if you have a room full of people who are interested in something different, something unique, excellent production, alittle bitta sleaze then immediately download: PLAYING HOUSE, BAR STAR i guarantee it'll be stuck in your head... if that song does it for you, then i highly recommend checking out the rest of the album!

Fun times

SareyFairy

Ok, so there is nothing earth-shattering here, but I thought it was a VERY fun album. Great for staying entertained on long road trips or background music at a party. I'll be downloading more Kudu.

"It's not Indy Rock.. It's not pretentious"

Music-Junkie

Good beats, fun don't need to think type of an album. King Kong, Hot Lava, Playing House, Neon Graveyard, Suite Life and Bar Star are hot fun tracks. I personally like listening to it in the shower or dancing around naked... but I guess that is just me.

I thought these were bad the FIRST time around! This is a valuable album in that it is proof positive that these songs can actually be worse. By the way, do you all know how OLD Black Betty is? It's old, REALLY old. Even Ledbelly COVERED it. No one REALLY knows who wrote it. The first time it hit the top 40 AM radio hit parade (well, the ONLY time, actually), there were cries of "Racism!" Oh, we are so much more enlightened here in the future! And it's GOOD to be here with you all, in THE FUTURE!!! We MADE it, one second per second! Now where did Betty git to? I need my feet rubbed, and some new MP3s! BETTY!?

Ultra-pop dance

Rockn2L8

If you remember Deee-Lite and liked them, (remember Groove is in the Heart?), then this band might appeal to you as well. A fusion of dance music, pop, and trumpet, it's not "ground-breaking, gotta have it now" music, but there are some enjoyable tracks. The first 2 tracks are worth a download, but skip the album.

Indy Rock?

Matchewg

Why the hell is this labeled under Indy Rock? It sounds nothing like Indy Rock and it doesn't deserve the title.

Can't get it out of my head. I love it all. Especially "Playing House", "Bar Star", "Back For More", and "Let's Finish".
